Any sense that the Phillies will go after Kenta Maeda? Money we got.

Yeah, that's the goal. While Hellickson is not as good as Hammel, this is similar to what Chicago was doing in 2014 when they were lousy. Acquire mediocre pitchers in the hopes of flipping them at the deadline.

I would have been doing the same thing with Ian Kennedy, but apparently he's considered good now.

That would be fun. It says his birthday is April 11, 1988 or is that his conception day? So he'd really be pitching the 2016 season at what we consider 27 years old.

eno sarris is really the only guy i find worth reading at fangraphs. he comped maeda to a familiar name last week.

RPhil - That is a pretty wild article when you consider that the familiar name is Nola. The upside is that it makes Nola an even better pick especially when cost/time control is figured in.

Unrelated, and likely not a Phillies topic but he should be investigated IMO, is where Jordan Zimmerman ends up. He's not an ace, but he is a better pitcher then Washington used (and abused) him as.

on the hellickson trade:
agree with those who consider the prospect traded away to have insignificant value. guy with an terrible k rate when repeating gcl is about as long a longshot as it gets, no matter what the upside. this means that we paid just about the lowest possible price in a trade for a major league starting pitcher.

with respect to the possibility of other, better options being out there, just looked at the steamer projections on some of the names. i used the list of guys someone likely to sign short deals posted by one of the guys in the crashburnalley discussion of this issue.

kennedy is forecast to be about 0.3 run/9 better than hellboy. colon is forecast to be about 0.1 run/9 better than hellboy. buerhle about equal. fister worse, harang worse, kendrick much worse, lohshe worse, simon worse, guthrie much worse

fangraphs also has crowdsourced contract estimates. average years and aav for kennedy 3 and $12m;
colon 1 and $13mil; buerhle 1 and $14mil; fister 2 and $10.5mil. kk 1 and $3mil (hey, look... a bargain!)

and, concerning the innings eating... only 90 mlb starters logged 146+ innings last year...3 per team. of those, about 50 or so performed at least as well as colon, and will thus be more expensive and very unlikely to sign for just a year or two or be available via trade without giving up a top-20 prospect. of the 40 sub-colon, hellickson was at about the mid point in actual performance. leaving only around 20 in the eat as many innings, pitch as well group. most of those are under contract and half of them are over 30 and thus ticking injury time bombs. there just plain aren't many relatively cheap arms available who can be expected to be able to pitch as many above-replacement innings as hellickson.

good deal.

Maeda's slider has good shape.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Kennedy is one of the ones who turned down a QO this year, so he'd cost a draft pick. So we'd just be hoping Hellickson = Kennedy. They are both Boras clients too. I think it's less than 50% likely to happen but it is possible IMO.

And after everyone saying we'd be getting a ton of low level prospects for the vets we signed last year and getting squat, I'm not too confident in that happening this year. But if Klentak's just trying to put together a watchable team, that's not the worst thing in the world either.

Would it have killed Hellickson to take a second to tweet that he's happy to come to the Phillies?

Fuck him.

Would you?(of course you would)

What would it take?
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of signing Heyward. Our #1 pick is protected and we'll almost definitely need an OFer unless we get lucky and almost everyone pans out. There may be only 1 or 2 free agents a year that would be worth having. He's definitely one of them and who knows how hard it will be to get players to sign here. Of the 6-8 worthy players that will be available over the next 3-4 years, we'll be lucky to get 1 or 2 of them. I think we should start trying now. Worst case, we have too many OFers and we have to trade one for a position of need. He does a lot of things well and it wouldn't hurt to have someone like him around the young guys.

It's probably tempting for Klentak to trade Giles based on the amount of teams interested.

What could he conceivably get for Giles?

sounds like Belt might be available. Do we have any old guys left that we could send to the Giants? Belt's been solid and just turns 28 in April.
