But if you sign those guys and they get injured or have bad years, you can cripple your farm system. I think it's worth the gamble in this case because the farm looks pretty good right now and the potential payoff is so great. But I think it depends on your level of risk aversion and how sure you think you are about the signed player(s) doing well.

Chen
Wieters
Desmond
Fowler
Lackey
Gordon
Gallardo
And promise these players that they will either be traded (which removes the QO) or will not receive a QO. Then trade all the players for prospects; farm system fully stocked, World Series in 2017.

i don't think any of those guys take a one year deal. maybe lackey and then that is a risk i don't think the phillies would take.
Jayson Stark @jaysonst
#Phillies have signed LH reliever James Russell to a minor-league deal. Matt Klentak keeps adding bullpen inventory. More like this to come
Jake Kaplan @jakemkaplan
Russell's deal includes an invitation to major-league camp.
Jake Kaplan @jakemkaplan
Russell's deal includes an invitation to major-league camp plus two discount day passes to Disneyworld.

You also block a player from playing the position that one of these signed players play and thusly not allowing for evaluation of said player for at least half of the season.
If you sign Gordon, he plays second and then you don't get to see if Odubel can play second (for example).
Franco was a bargain $100,000 international signing. Nola and Crawford were top draft picks. Giles was an under-the-radar seventh-round draft pick with a big arm and a bad delivery. Credit the Phillies’ player-development folks for polishing it up. Herrera was a Rule 5 pick. Williams and Thompson came in a trade.

I'll tell ya, Amaro's reign wasn't as bad as we made it out to be. I think his biggest mistake was not changing course early enough and it ultimately cost him his job.
