in trying to research an answer, i came across the 40-man roster rules on wikipedia and found this:

In some trades, one of the components is a "player to be named later" which usually turns out to be a minor league player. The unnamed player is included as part of a trade when the teams cannot immediately agree on a specific player or when the player is not yet eligible to be traded. In these cases, the player in question must be named within six months. Cash or some other consideration may be exchanged in lieu of the player to be named later. For example, during the 1994 Major League Baseball strike, the Minnesota Twins traded Dave Winfield to the Cleveland Indians at the trade deadline. Among the conditions of the trade were that if the Indians played no more games in 1994, "Indians general manager John Hart must write a check for $100 made out to the Minnesota Twins and take Twins general manager Andy MacPhail out to dinner."[5]

cutting dom and dugan means that just asche and maybe danks are the lefty platoon partners for frenchy and altherr until quinn and williams arrive. i guess age and arbitration makes the guys we kept more likely to have some value in 2016 than the guys we didn't.

I'm kind of sensing the beginning of a dysfunctional front office with overlapping responsibilities.

Decisions regarding coaches and the 40 man I assume are coming from president MacPhail, instead of waiting for the hiring of a gm. Now, who is responsible for hiring that gm? I thought it would be MacPhail, but now does Middleton want his guy? Who will he answer to? It seems like Middleton wants to be owner/president and MacPhail wants to be president/gm. Depending on the gm, I could easily see some power struggle in the not so distant future.

i'm sure the structure will be properly communicated to the candidates and i don't anticipate it will be a problem if that person accepts.

Pretty sure the Rule 5 deadline is in November. Not sure on arbitration timelines though but it still seems early.

Eh I'm not feeling any discord or dysfunction. If the scouty/minor league evaluator folks in the organization have determined that Dugan etc. aren't in the future plans, they aren't in the future plans. A new GM isn't likely going to have some significant insight into their trajectory day one anyway. Jordan and Proefrock are the best ones suited to that decision regardless.

So this leaves 29 on the 40-man roster with 6 on the 60-day DL. I think.

And yes a new gm would likely defer to Proefrock and Jordan regarding the evaluation of players. The question arises for a new gm seeing that decisions normally left to the gm are instead being made by the president, is what his real power and responsibilities will be.

I would liken the Phillies gm position to that of a Cadillac Escalade that your dad bought you... However he enabled controls that don't let you go more than 45 mph, drive more than 50 miles a day and only able to listen to am radio. Suddenly, a top of the line Kia Rio without those limitations looks pretty damn sweet.

a lot of teams are turning the gig into a two man job. i don't think it's as worrisome as you feel.

There are currently 4 teams playing baseball and the one with the brightest future (although not for this season) is using the same setup the Phillies plan to use. Furthermore, another one of the four has already told the current GM he's on the way out.

Edit: Shapiro is going to be President in Toronto (and not GM), but that means it'll be a similar set-up to the Cubs and Phillies, even if they extend AA.

November 20th is the Roster Deadline for Rule 5, etc.

5 days after the end of the WS is the Qualifying Offer Deadline.

12 days after the end of the WS is the last day for FAs to accept QO's.

The Rule 5 draft is on December 10th--players can be waived (until December 3rd) or outrighted (until December 10th) off of the "Reserve Lists" in between. That's not particularly common. It's a favor to the player to release him early, and most teams do this.

Yeah, exactly. It's also a classy move to let the guys have more time to latch on somewhere else.

While Dom and Joseph are definitely gone -- is it not possible for Dugan to be re-signed as a minor league player, not on the 40 man? While he didn't have a very successful showing at Lehigh, he has hit wherever he has played (albeit briefly due to injury). Has the FO completely given up on him?
