they still have umberger for two more years at the same hit. i guess if they really wanted to punt the next three seasons then it makes sense. if not, i don't think it was worth it to free up $9M in years four and five.

I do think they misjudged just how bad Umberger would be. I knew he wouldn't be good, but I didn't think there was any way he'd be that bad so soon.

And on the contrary, I think that's exactly when you want to free up the money, when you're going to need it to be good again. I think they knew quite well they weren't going to be good this year, and I think they thought Hartnell's drop off would be coming sooner than later. Maybe they'll be wrong, but I thought it was a decent risk assessment.

Plus, they can buy out Umberger after next season relatively cheaply if they need the money.
