It worked for the Pope.

Except at least the Pope managed in the minors and played in the big leagues. Jennings has done neither.

Never played in MLB.

He hit .374 in seven minor league seasons. Highest level was class C. He was always very old for his age.

Yeah, I phrased that poorly and ended up saying the wrong thing. I didn't mean that the Pope played MLB. I meant that Owens played professional baseball, Jennings did not.

I just listened to Buster Olney and Jerry Crasnick talking about it on the BBTN podcast, and they said Jennings only tried out for the Yankees but never made a minor league squad. I assume they're correct about that.

This is a real test of the sabermetric opinion that managers, more or less, are irrelevant.

The last time he wasn't in the Majors, the Phillies won the WFC. Now our boys are on a 6-game win streak. CONNECT THE DOTS

Starter in 2002 for the Robert Person game. He'll be missed!

Also, does this mean Bartolo Colon is the last player still playing who wore an Expos uniform?

My honest reaction to this information is: who?

I will say this is an interesting article on the subject of the last active players to have played for no longer existing team X. Cool that there was an active former Washington Senator in 1986, the first year I can remember watching some Phillies games (I was 7 going on 8).

Watching the Phils and reading this article about the pitcher hitting 8th, since I was surprised to hear the Rockies have been doing it. I was struck by this item in the article, which, while not new information to me, did get me thinking for a moment:

Russell A. Carleton wrote:We know that lineup construction itself is vastly overplayed. In a study that is not quoted nearly enough, Tom Ruane found that assuming the same nine players, the difference between the perfectly optimized lineup and the “He might actually be trying to sabotage his own team” lineup is actually pretty minimal. People place far too much emphasis on lineup construction relative to the added benefits that it can bring to a team.

I have no doubt that, overall, this is likely true; but I do wonder if there might not be "special exceptions" to the trend. I am thinking here specifically about the Phillies in their halcyon days and all the times Utley and Howard batted back to back. Granted, the 2005-2008 Phillies scored plenty, and even the 2009-2011 versions were no slouches. But we all know how many times we seemed to simply allow the other team to use one lefty specialist to get through the heart of our order without having to face Burrell, or Werth, or Pence, or hell even Mayberry (in his amazing 2011 second half). I don't know how you can study a negative - what would have happened had Manuel refused to allow teams to do that - but let's say my imagination basically refuses to believe its effect would have been negligible.

Utley had an .818 OPS vs. lefties in his career.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

I suspect the single biggest difference maker with the Phillies would have been putting the best OBP guys in front of Howard.
they were a chick hanging out with her friends at a bar, the Phillies would be the 320 lb chick with a nose wart and a dick - Trent Steele
