“I like young players, and I like draft picks,” Hextall said. “My vision is to build this team and continue to make this team better through the draft. That doesn’t mean we won’t make trades; it doesn’t mean at some point, if it’s a good enough player and we’ve got to trade a young player, we may look at that. But it’s not a vision of mine to trade young players for older players. It would have to be a really, really strong deal for us.”

I think in hockey, similar to soccer, analytics is an attempt to look at space and where players wind up on the ice/pitch and how they perform in high leverage situations rather than trying to generate an all encompassing metric of a player's value.

Hasn't this basically been the organizational philosophy since Homer took over? When's the last time we traded young guys for old guys? The only exception was Pronger, and that was a pretty big exception given that Pronger was exactly the player they needed.

@tpanotchCSN: Gustafsson told me from Europe this morning, "right way for me to go [KHL] ... Hard to get better from the press box."

Eklund:

The Flyers will be looking to make a move at the draft for a D-man and the three names I keep hearing mentioned are Anaheim's Sami Vatanen, Dallas' Trevor Daley, and Winnipeg's Dustin Byfuglien. All three are names you will hear a lot of from several teams at the draft. The Maple Leafs also have interest in Daley.

ah fkkkk

Vatanen is basically Timmo but 30 years younger

Well, it's the Royals in the ECHL and the Phantoms in the AHL

attendance might go up with the new affiliation and new ownership. maybe a name change is in the works?

They haven't had a steady ECHL affiliate in a while. They were sharing a team with the Penguins, then they got the Trenton Titans for a year before that franchise went POOF, then this past year it was a South Carolina team

As for Reading, they moved from Columbus when the Blue Jackets joined the league, so I doubt they'll change their name. Plus Reading Royals sounds like a LeVar Burton thing

Wow, the Trenton titans went kaput? Crazy, used to love going out there for games. Beer dude would basically give us free beers if we brought the cup back to refill. Just had to tip him nice.

they just got a new owner who is planning on redoing the entire Center along with doing a lot of new promotions and business affiliations in the area. I wouldn't be surprised at a name change to go away from the previous ownership, is all I'm saying.

i really hope they don't change the name. flyers have been pretty awful at supplying their echl affiliates in the past which has the diehard fans worried. i'd expect that to change with hextall at the helm now. he was in reading quite a bit when they were affiliated with the kings and seemed to realize the echl can play a role in development. bears sort of hung them out to dry this past season anyway so i'm not too concerned with losing them.

@BroadStBull: Per @slapschotts, #Flyers sign Union LW Matt Hatch, 24, to FA contract and he will play for Phantoms. He had 34 G, 39 A in 148 career games.

Teammate of the Ghost

@BroadStBull: Hextall on LW Matt Hatch, who signed today with #Flyers' AHL affiliate: "He's a gritty kid with high-end speed."

How does Jim Benning's selection as GM in Vancouver, and who he selects as head coach, affect the Ryan Kesler situation?

Darren Dreger: Ryan Kesler hasn't changed his mind. He wants a fresh start and to move on from Vancouver; he met with Benning earlier this week to talk about that. It's believed that Kesler still has six teams on his list that he's willing to be traded to. And we think that Philadelphia and Anaheim are among those.
