Ryan Howard 5-Year Extension 5/$125MM + $10MM buyout THREAD

Postby mcare89 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 16:41:05

wiki:

Keith Law was recently owned by Philadelphia drive time sports radio host Mike Missanelli while feebly arguing that Jesus Montero is a better prospect than Ryan Howard is a great slugger. This will surely taint Harvard boy's reputation. In addition, Keith complained to his boss that he was mistreated by Missanelli on the air. In reality, Keith is mistaking "mistreated" with "outdueled by a superior mind".

He really complained to his boss?

When will there be a SABR guy that has muscles and a winning personality and is handsome and smooth with the ladies. He will be the one to lead us to a new level of consciousness and enjoyment of a child's game
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

That's not an argument, it's just contradiction.

But really, when it all comes down to it, who would have thought that Keith Law would have been a bad mix with the guy who just said "Algorithms? What's that all about? What does that even mean?"

This is undeniably true. At the same time, Law comes off like a douche - in this interview, in his chats, on his twitters, in his articles. His points become less effective because he is a douche. No one likes being talked down to by a douche. It doesn't matter if the douche is correct. That is how the real world works.

Agreed. Law needs to explain the concepts he takes for granted much better to the type of people who listen to sports radio who have never had a statistics or economics class in their lifetime. Is there something that requires SABR dudes to be smug asshats?

Crashburn, you wanna field this one

On general mathematic principles, such as mean-regression and such, that's not Law's job. It's not his fault Americans are pitiful when it comes to math.

On Sabermetric principles, he doesn't have enough airtime to describe them both accurately and concisely in a way that makes most people grasp the concept. At some colleges, they offer Sabermetric classes. The stuff gets complicated.

Sabermetrics simply makes for bad radio. There's no way to discuss it, especially with someone who disagrees with you, in a way that is entertaining and does not come across as arrogant to less educated people.

On Missanelli's behavior... to quote Errol Morris, "A stupid person is a person who treats a smart person as though they're stupid."

while slugging is great, it doesn't make a complete player. and thats what Law was driving at.

Just say "yes, he's been a great power hitter," then, before explaining the other components of value to a team.

It was silly to keep asking what Missannelli meant.

He was trying to get to the point that I so brilliantly made - if it's not leading to wins, it is a meaningless statement. Bobby Abreu is the preeminent right fielder afraid of walls. Pat Burrell is the preeminent Philadelphia athlete at fucking chicks. That stuff doesn't MEAN anything. Law, to his credit, fully acknowledged the great power. But Missanelli, a rabid anti-intellectual in the philaphans mode, decided to keep hammering a phrase that sounds really good but ultimately has nothing to do with why someone should or should not be paid lots of money.

Missanelli has a master's degree and a law degree. He also passed the bar exam and was a practicing lawyer before deciding to get into sports journalism.

To call him stupid is, well, stupid.
