Ryan Howard 5-Year Extension 5/$125MM + $10MM buyout THREAD

Postby Stay_Disappointed » Tue Apr 27, 2010 21:12:38

Brian MacPherson of The Providence Journal:
Agents for Prince Fielder, Adrian Gonzalez and Albert Pujols are all but drooling in the aftermath of the $125 million contract extension to which the Philadelphia Phillies signed slugging first baseman Ryan Howard.

If a team was willing to give $25 million a year to Howard, a relatively one-dimensional 30-year-old slugger who has shown an increased vulnerability to lefthanded pitching, what might they give to Fielder or Gonzalez?

You know, Howard's year-in and year-out HR/RBI numbers are INSANE.

when you take out the "steroid era" numbers, he really is a historically dominant power hitter

But what the hell does that even mean if he's got an OPS under .900 in some of those years?

Has anyone ever looked at Adrian Gonzalez's platoon split? It's pretty bad. Howard's platoon split gets more press because he has the MVPs, but he has a higher OPS versus LHP than Gonzalez does.

More from BP -- this time Perrotto with quotes from the smug one:

However, Amaro also realizes he is in a unique situation with his hometown Phillies. Fans pour through the turnstiles at Citizens Bank Park to see a dynamic team that has won three straight National League Central titles and back-to-back NL pennants. Phillies president David Montgomery plows the vast majority of profits back into the club.

Thus, despite the criticism he has taken from statistical analysts, Amaro can do things like sign first baseman Ryan Howard to a five-year, $125-million contract extension.

"We're in a very good situation right now," Amaro said. "Our fans keep coming out and giving us great support. In turn, it provides us with the resources to do the things we need to do to build a championship team. We're not in a situation where we can just spend without limits but, because of the fan support, we've been able to do the types of things we want to do such as signing our core players to long-term deals. Don't think that a day ever goes by that I'm not thankful for that."

While time will tell whether the Phillies will be able to keep Werth or Rollins, Amaro certainly sounds like a man willing to re-sign them.

"We tried to design the (Howard) contact in a way where our goal continues to be the same, to keep a championship-caliber club on the field year in and year out," Amaro said. "We feel with the way we structured the contract, it gives us the flexibility to do that, as far as Jayson, Jimmy and other guys who can become free agents in the not-so-distant future. Naturally we'd like to keep all these guys. We'll go by a case-by-case basis and hopefully we can keep this group together."

Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Joggaphy is not a strength at BP.

It's because everyone there is an engineer or computer programmer. Once they get a geographer on staff, there will be less groupthink.

This contract through 2013 - Defensible (though controversial) business decision

This contract 2014 and onward?...

If Howard is worth $25 mil/yr to the Phillies, how much is Utley, who as anyone would attest to is a better defender and a better hitter at a more premium position, couldn't he go to the front office and say "Hey, I want $30 mil a year?"

He's signed through 2013, so technically, no. But if I'm his agent I'm sending a dozen black roses to Amaro every day until they renegotiate.

When's the last time anybody really renegotiated a deal in baseball?

The one thing I'll give Missanelli credit for is that he will take on anyone head-to-head.

But yeah, that should be a fantastic listen.
