I like what he did with his swing (lowered hands to shorten path to ball). The dead center HR in San Fran is impressive. He's clearly a strong dude and I defy you to find a FA right fielder with a better rack

Well, even Keith Law acknowledged that he really changed his swing

Pat Burrell wasn't walking through that door fans. Geoff Jenkins isn't walking through that door David Delluci isn't walking through that door. And the sooner they realize that those three guys aren't walking through that door, the better off it will be for all of us

Now that you mention it David Dellucci would be a pretty sweet platoon option

I appreciate the luke/tepid to slightly positive reactions here but i find this to be a risky move worthy only of Rube. The Crashburn blurb was spot on. This didn't need to happen so fast. And honestly, this team got old in a hurry so let's get more 36 year olds? We can only hope that he does what Raul Ibanez did that first half of that first season. Yes, he came a tad cheaper with one less year, but likely they will be paying 8mil for 2015 for a guy who is either on the DL or HAS fallen off the cliff. How is this part of any long term strategy??

An upgrade to Mayberry and Martinez et al, for sure -- likely, but in all of MLB, there was no 24-25 yr old that had upside that would cost 1-2mm ?

Yea but that whole arbitration and being under control for six years stuff gets in the way

Anyone who tries to rationalize 2 years, $16M is fucking brain-dead.

We're paying a guy, and starting a guy, who's 36 years old in RF. When he was 33, he was below average. When he was 34, he was below replacement. When he was 35, he was very good. The problem is, Amaro BETTER expect that he's above average the next 2 year, or we shouldn't be p(l)aying him. But if he DOES expect him to be above average, that's just a big an issue.

And, Grote, you're talking about above average outfield defense in RF like it's a given. BBREF lists 2 stats for defense (Total Zone Fielding Runs Above Average, and BIS Defensive Runs Above Average). One of those stats says he was 7 runs below average last year in RF, and the other says he was 12 runs above average. FanGraphs has him at 3.7 runs below average. Why should I bank on above average defense from him?

If you think you're going to compete, you need a better player than this. If you're not competing, you play ANYONE but a 36-year-old, like, say, Ruf, and evaluate what you've got.

This is gonna be a fun offseason.

Ruf has been evaluated in right field. He's not a right fielder

Really Byrd could suck I don't even care I'm just trying to push back on the river of impotent cringe worthy fugees like wailing that this board has evolved into. Save it for a real stomp around and get pissed off move, like when we sign Pierz

I'm fine with this, precisely because it's a dumb but not disastrous move.

I've totally given up on Amaro. All I hope for is that in what I think will be his last year--wait till you see how ticket sales fall off in 2013--he does no serious long-term harm.

This is what I don't get among those of you who want to see big moves this winter: unless he has the Yankees 2008-2009 offseason--and Tex and CC aren't out there to be had--it won't matter. Even if he signs, say, Ellsbury and McCann and Tanaka for a total of $330 million including posting fee, that's unlikely to get the Phillies to 90 wins.

I'd tear it all down myself. But they won't, so a minimal-harm strategy that speeds Amaro's firing is the next best thing.

So play him in Left. And outfield defense in a small park is a lot less important than we're trying to make it. Revere's elite defense really turned shit around.

The board hasn't evolved into anything. The team blows, and is run by an absolute baseball moron. We haven't even cratered yet, as evidenced by Marlon signing and AJ/Joe Smith/etc rumors. And there's no way this guy has a plan, or the ability to have a plan, that gets us back up from cratered.

Nick Cafardo ‏@nickcafardo 4m
The Phillies pouncing on Marlon Byrd on a 2-year deal received a lot of "I don't get it" responses around the lobby at GM Meetings.

Nick Cafardo ‏@nickcafardo 18s
The other common response in the lobby of the GM Meetings hotel to the 2-year, $16 million Marlon Byrd deal with Phils was: "Melky Cabrera."
