But he's not getting paid anywhere close to what last season's production was worth. If he even sniffs what he did last year with above-average RF defense, it's a win

For it to matter though, yeah, they need to do a lot more now

Yep.

This whole problem is only getting fixed through the draft and international signings.

A few Arubans and a Curaçao dude will help.

I think the Phils hired an extern from the Dutch Antilles.

well, it certainly is a creative move. Those Picassos in the front office went and painted us a masterpiece of creativity with this one.

sign an aging OFer coming off his best season to a 2-year deal a week into free agency = CREATIVE

This is all Wade's fault

Cheese isn't amused either

no loss of any draft pick and is only for 2 years...No downside.

Downside is your RF is Marlon Byrd

How about Chris Young?

That's the point. This move doesn't really matter. Barring something crazy (trading Lee or Hamels or Brown) you're locked in to players at every position but C and maybe CF. So, unless you're signing Ellsbury, it's just more of the same shitty offense. Why tie yourself to Byrd on November 12th? Why be the first move here?

Fully expect some terrible MR signings next.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Rube looked at his average and said no way

But you're fully assuming they overpaid out of haste. I understand that assumption, given the past few years, but Fangraphs and MLB Trade Rumors predicted almost this exact deal. Haven't seen Bowden's list but he's usually pretty spot on.

I predicted and still expect several moves. One of them had to be first.

I don't know, the more I think about it, the more I'm OK with it. The alternatives will cost much more in either money, draft picks, or prospects (in a trade).

The problem I have is Byrd is not simply an inventory guy now, he's our RF (at least in a platoon). Will he produce enough to justify taking ABs away from Darin Ruf again?

At least they'd have someone that drinks as much as we do.

I'm actually pretty laid back about this off-season in general

If they get miracle years out of bums like Marlon Byrd and make another couple moves, they can sneak in the playoffs

If it all falls apart, Amaro is gone

Who cares what was predicted? This could totally turn out to be a positive deal from a WAR per $$ perspective and it could still be stupid because it's not enough WAR to make a difference and it prevents you from further improving one of limited open spots to improve (as a practical matter).

I'll wait and see what happens. Maybe I'll be surprised.

I'm just saying, those guys have a better feel for the market and what Byrd could/would get than we do. And if they're right, and if we make more moves, I don't care about the timing of this deal
