More like:

Pretty excited for the 36-year-old coming off a career high power numbers year to pick up his 50-game PED suspension in early May.

You are fine with them signing a player for 2 years at 8 million at the beginning of FA because it could have been much worse? Is this really what we've come to expect?

Let's see how it all shakes out. The money could go crazy, in which case waiting for Byrd may have been worse. RH power is very scarce.

If you believe in bWAR and the latest thinking on the value of a win, this guy was worth $35M last year. I'm skeptical of that, wary of his age and terrible 2012, etc., but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he earns most of that contract in 2014.

No, Delmon Young came at the very end, not in early November.

Nickname was "VD" when he played for Reading. That's all I got.

Brent Hershey ‏@BrentHQ 20m

Marlon Byrd’s career year, at 35 yo, came with a .365 BABIP and 16% home run per fly rate. #NotSustainable #Phillies

Byrd will not move the needle enough in any way to be significant, so why Rube had to move so quickly is anyone's guess. But, really, was there a better available alternative at a reasonable price?

deitch insisting they want to make a major trade and this is a security blanket if they can't do so.

By signing someone this early, they are guessing that there wasn't. But counting on a 36 year old Byrd who magically had a career season last year to keep it up is probably not the best thing.
