I don't think that's the right way to look at it, necessarily. You've got to take into account the money they aren't paying Fielder anymore (and who knows how/when the $30 mil from Detroit to Texas is being sent and whether that matters).

I'd rather pay Fielder 7/176 than Kinsler 4/100. By a wide margin. The Scherzer issue is the only potential snag but he's not a FA now. Plenty of time to figure out that money.

Today, I agree with you. 2 years from now, I'm not sure I will. Prince was pretty bad this year. He's walking less. His OPS was meh. It's not hard to imagine that he's peaked and it's all downhill from there. This isn't an argument in favor of Kinsler either, who I think has been overrated for two years now. But if you think you've gotten the best out of Prince, I'd rather have the shorter, cheaper deal than an extra three years at 25 per for Prince. And two years from now, that deal could very easily be the Ryan Howard deal.

I wonder if this shared risk sort of deal will become common. Sadly it's much easier to see the Phillies in the Texas role of assuming risk--for a guy like Kemp--than figuring out how to clear some of the Howard mess.

This is a neat deal.

I would assume Profar at 2B

ESPN suggests the Rangers might go after Cano next, then they can trade Profar to the Cardinals for Oscar Taveras, which would fit both teams' needs

I'll believe a top prospect for top prospect trade when one happens.

I think it depends on how you feel about Kinsler. If you like him, it's definitely a good deal for Detroit. I'm not a big fan. OTOH, I think Prince is fat and awesome, so I'm biased.

In other news, my sources indicate Rube is looking to sign Kent Tekulve as a set up man...

Detroit dumps Fielder after two years and Amaro only gets ripped twice? You're getting soft BSG

Yes it's terrible. Who is protecting Cabrera now? The team won the Pennant and lost in the ALCS in Prince's two seasons. You couldn't figure out how to resign Max and give this thing another go?

Seems like they're paying a lot of money to have the privilege to replace Prince Fielder in their lineup with Ian Kinsler. Great move, Detroit.

It kind of does illustrate that the lack of free agents at a position doesn't mean a lack of solutions at that position.

Fielder 7/176, Kinsler 4/100 or Howard 3/85? Of if the Phillies traded Howard for Kinsler, maybe the Rangers would've asked for 40 or 45 mil...Kinsler 4/115 vs Howard 3/85?

Wow, somehow this did not make me feel worse about the Howard contract.

I think that until Howard shows he can stay healthy, you'd have to pay too much to get rid of him for it to be worth it. If he does stay healthy and put up something close to his 2011 offense, though, the obligation suddenly looks a lot less bad -- to American League teams especially

Cabrera is god but his numbers were even better with Fielder in the lineup, compared to both his career averages as well as just his time in Detroit when he became one of the most elite players in the game. That's not a coincidence to me.
