Just curious, is there anything to stop Rakuten from cutting a secret deal with an MLB team where they only agreed to post Tanaka if they get more than $20MM? As in, $20 mil publicly but some other amount "off the books". Then they also arrange for him to agree to terms with that team so there's no open bidding?

I doubt it would happen, and it may be too complicated. But it's not unlike Cam Newton, Derrick Rose, etc. coming out of high school. Pay the right people the right amount and he's yours.

That's a great point.

I have found rakuten formerly buy.com to be a reputable company.

If I was the phillies analytical intern... I would straight up tell rube, fuck those other peripherals 25-0, go and get him. I believe I would also be promoted to assistant gm instantly for my knowledge of the game.

He doesn't set you back in terms of prospects, at 25 isn't on the downside of his career, other than the workload and sometimes you don't know when an arm might explode... It's only money and a damn good risk.

Tanaka pitched an inning of relief a day after an 160 pitch start last season. He often threw more than 130 pitches in a start and averaged 8 IP.

He is a Verducci Effect with a Pitcher Abuse Points nightmare waiting to explode.

The ball used in Japan is smaller than the one used here. Easier to throw breaking balls?

Probably easier to throw a splitter, I would think.

Mark Mulder trying to make a come back. Signed a minor league deal with the Angels. Hasn't pitched since 2008.

According to Ken R, Mulder was also a target of your philadelphia phillies because of course he was.

Why wouldn't every team offer a guy like Mulder a minor league contract? That's pretty much the definition of low-risk, high-reward.
