I don't know. I get the feeling that this has as much to do with Jay Z establishing his agency than Cano.

Or maybe he's using the Mariners to squeeze the Yanks into a bigger deal. He's probably sitting there thinking, "Oh crap, how do I tell the players union I'm going to turn this deal down?"

they'll trade walker for him and we'll all envy the rays again.

They do, but it's unclear if they'll be willing to include Taijuan Walker. If so, the rays would probably take it.

NY is receiving offers for Brett Gardner, but they haven't said anything about trading him yet. RealKen thinks he might be dealt for a starting pitcher

Was about to post that. I love Gardner though if they're looking for SP, the Phillies don't match up... unless they'd trade Kendrick. Which I'd do in a heartbeat, but Smug would not.

Yanks could also use Revere as a 4th/5th OF type since they have Beltran/Soriano/Ellsbury in the OF, one of which is likely to be hurt at all times. Paps and Revere for Gardner. Done.

Just talked to my dad, who's friends with a guy close to Andrew Bailey. Apparently the Sox told him one night they were honoring his contract and looking forward to having him back, then nontendered him the next day

Sounds like he's out until July anyway

Man that would be a fantastic trade. Even with the inevitable ensuing move for another overpriced closer.

i was just coming here to post that very article. astonishing anecdote about former SABR-darling jack zdruacisanfdsjsacik

One of those speaking out is Blengino, the former No. 2 in Zduriencik’s front office. Blengino, who was working for the Milwaukee Brewers with Zduriencik at the time, said he authored virtually the entire job application package Zduriencik gave the Mariners in 2008, depicting a dual-threat candidate melding traditional scouting with advanced statistical analysis.

Blengino said he prepared the package because he was versed in the hot trend of using advanced stats for team decisions.

“Jack portrayed himself as a scouting/stats hybrid because that’s what he needed to get the job,” Blengino said. “But Jack never has understood one iota about statistical analysis. To this day, he evaluates hitters by homers, RBI and batting average and pitchers by wins and ERA. Statistical analysis was foreign to him. But he knew he needed it to get in the door.”

I'm impressed that so many people went on the record about it. Normally these types of hackjobs are just one-sided sour grapes, but there's four or five pretty strong on the record sources there. That's when you know it's bad.

posted that in the cano thread too. i remember jack z being touted as the new age advanced stats gm when he was hired. pretty great that he doesn't have a fucking clue about anything. his bitching to blengino about the font size and width of the margins is one of the best things i've read.

So the fabled Jack Z is even less stats inclined than Ruben? Who'da thunk it.

Yes. But the correspondingly shocking reveal for Ruben would be that he uses anything *but* average, HR, RBI, wins and ERA to evaluate players.

As I wrote in another thread, though, I'm sure he's gone in a year.
