The top three RF in MLB this year in WAR are Victorino, Pence and Werth.

i never really got the overwhelming hate for pence and the hatred by some of the fan base for victorino. still remember djbigpelf posting over and over again that victorino couldn't be any everyday OF before the 2008 season.

All the FOX games in May, June and July up to the All-Star break are 7pm, but instead of starting at 4 like past years, the Phils games are starting at 3 for some reason. Maybe they're trying to avoid shadowzzzzz

Interesting Beerleaguer post about the Phillies deploying a shift last night, which links to a great article about the Pirates' defensive shifts, in case you missed it

What difference would it have made? Pence isn't a difference maker. They would still suck. And if he stays, maybe Brown wouldn't have started the season with a job. Or you never get to see Ruf what can do. Or Rube resigns him to some dumbass deal because he's so desperate.

Trading him was the correct move. The problem was not getting anything useful in return.

I'm with you guys. I don't particularly like watching his dumb swing and he runs like a giraffe, but he's good at baseball and plays a position that we need someone in so get um.

The decisions to cut ties with them were each not unreasonable under the given circumstances. However, in light of results, I think it's fair to question whether, in making judgments, Rube is influenced too greatly by the "Phillie-for-Life" philosophy (at least in regards to position players) vs. hard, cold analysis. Is it a coincidence that the players let go were not drafted and developed by the Phils while the Howards, Rollinses and Utleys of the world were?

I think you're on to something, but that it's more the organizational philosophy than Amaro-centric. Of course he himself is a "Phillie for life" of sorts.

That said, I think Victorino basically fit into that category, even though he wasn't drafted here, with his profile on those winning teams, fan support, community service, etc. Burrell fit the bill, too, although he butted heads with mgmt at times.

Hopefully it will turn out that Howard and Rollins were special cases in terms of the team going a little or a lot overboard in retaining them for irrational reasons. Utley is absolutely a special case.

Yeah, Pence makes me sad. Werth and Victorino were obviously contract situations where it made sense to go in another direction (even though I miss them too), but Pence was right here, under contract. In fact that was one of the main reasons he was traded for, because he wasn't a rental. He would have prevented an awful lot of Mayberry and D Young and Laynce Nix.

He wouldn't have made much of a difference this year, though it would have made the games a lot more entertaining. Done is done, and maybe Joesph or Rosin will help down the road.

Sure, you think Mark Leiter sucked, but I'll have you know he's tied for 511th through 527th on the all-time career saves list, with 26.

So there.
