Phillies Thoughts- Ruben Amaro: Great GM or The Greatest GM?

I'm sure you do.

Having the first overall pick would be pretty cool. I'm thinking 65-68 gets that done.

Interview with Amaro where he cites bullpen and catcher as the biggest needs this offseason. Seems like Chooch is outta here

I thought about revising the "I want McCann" campaign because all you sissies are afraid of the lefties. So the only other name intriguing to me is Salty, but he's a switch hitter who, against lefties, makes Ryan Howard look good.

F it.

6 man bench:
Anytime a lefty comes up you do: Mayberry for Howard, Frandsen for Asche

Virtually any time a lefty starts you do: Kratz for McCann (but you don't necessarily pinch hit for him)

Selective use of a righty to give Revere/Brown a blow: Wells
One left handed bopper
One guy who can't hit who can play 6 positions (Galvis)

I'm not afraid of lefties. I'm afraid of a multiyear commitment to a catcher with 10 ML seasons under his belt who hasn't played in more than 128 games since 2010.

Legit fear but... Are catchers really supposed to play in more than 130 games? They get at least a day off a week. So at best I guess you're doing 27 ish weeks you get 135 games. Throw in some 2 off day weeks and it's easy to see 130 as a cap. Further, despite this limitation he's been worth 18 million, 8 million and ~18 million (pro rate the rest of his season stats) in the last 3 years.

I want to do something bold to avoid a 5 year deal like 3/50 or even 3/54. Probably have to do 4 years though as a compromise and I could live with 4/60, 4/62 maybe even 4/64.

Didn't (doesn't) McCann have an eye problem too?

I'd question any valuation that had a guy who posted a .698 OPS and 86 OPS+ as being worth $8MM last year. He needed offseason shoulder surgery to repair labrum issues, and those seem to have resolved, but I get nervous paying long-term for someone with that type of injury history.

That being said, I can live with a three-year deal. I just don't see it happening, even with an overpay. Again, the guy has already caught over 1000 games in his ML career alone. That type of wear and tear adds up quickly.

If Amaro's words are to be taken at face value, I expect them to pursue McCann

All the more reason that everyone should be worried about signing him.

Rather have a runner thrown out by a mile, then stranded at 3rd.

I been really debating on if I want to renew my tickets next year, I think today might have made up my mind. I'm better off just buying them off stub hub when I want to go

Ruben Amaro's current winning percentage as GM is .555 (technically, this is rounded up). Let's hope a .551 winning percentage threshold applies to him.
