Phillies Thoughts- Ruben Amaro: Great GM or The Greatest GM?

Right, so we should not criticize anything because baseball is hard, Ruben is smart, we would all hide under our desks in fear as a GM, we've criticized and been wrong before, lol funny game, Rube couldn't have a done anything different, etc...

Wish this stuff didn't get regurgitated every time Trent or whoever makes a negative yet completely reasonable comment.

My biggest fear is that Ruben really believes Michael Young is his "best hitter" and he's going to sign him again next year.

And again, I wasn't speaking with reference to specific examples because that phrase has been bandied about for pretty much every little thing that has gone wrong this season

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling revealed in a Boston Globe article published Sunday that he suffered a heart attack in November 2011 that may have been partially caused by stress related to 38 Studios, his video game company that went bankrupt seven months later.

wasn't the Michael Young deal a success as a stopgap measure?

little surprised that gets lumped in with the bad stuff

now if he re-signs him...

6 million bucks for production that Frandsen probably could've given you isn't a success.

Also, the not trading Michael Young at the deadline is the bigger complaint.

$6MM is a lot of a money for a replacement level performance (by fWAR). It's hard to consider that a successful transaction, when we can have comparable production from his replacement (Frandsen).

I still like the Adams signing, because that was at least defensible due to upside. Those are the types of gambles that big market teams should make.

To me it's only a success if you consider pointless moves that don't hurt you later a success. He hasn't been good or helped any and he wont be back. But it precluded more harmful moves, which is good. That really can't be the standard, can it?

the other day my buddy was doing a "Worst Flyers Ever" roster, just a 25-man roster of guys whose names made him physically cringe at the sight. so i did one for the Phils, 1991 (the year I became aware baseball existed, basically) to present by rWAR

it's a little dubious of an exercise because it's hard for bad players to rack up negative WAR, as they typically don't stick around in the majors for too long if they're bad enough. but there are some real bad names regardless. also keep in mind that some guys were decent ballplayers elsewhere, but this just considers their stints as Phillies

Catchers:
Jonny Estrada
Mark Parent

Infielders:
Rico Brogna
Kevin Jordan
Desi Relaford
Kim Batiste
Abraham Nunez
Juan Castro

Outfielders:
Wendell Magee
Delmon Young
Lee Tinsley
Eric Bruntlett
Ty Wigginton (remember when he played the outfield?)

Rotation:
Tyler Green
Pat Combs
Gavin Floyd
Andy Ashby
Adam Eaton

Bullpen:
Amaury Telemaco
Jeff Brantley
Roberto Hernandez
Norm Charlton
Paul Spoljaric (fudged this one a wee bit--he started three games then was moved to the bullpen for two before his season ended due to injury--but he was too horrendous to exclude from the roster)
Scott Ruffcorn
Danys Baez

some of those guys stats from their Phils days are absurd. Nunez's awfulness with the bat was particularly stunning and Spoljaric's line is great-- 11 1/3 IP, 19 ER

Bruntlett is a WFC, should be automatically excluded from any of these lists

Adam Eaton wasn't on the post season roster in 2008. Bruntlett hit a HR in the WS AND was involved in an unassisted triple play. Plus the beard FFS

Decided we're basically the 1992 Mets, and that we should refer to Amaro by the name of whoever their GM was.

I propose swapping John Bowker for Bruntlett.
