Phillies Thoughts- Ruben Amaro: Great GM or The Greatest GM?

Part of the problem is that there are no real quick fixes in baseball anymore. You can try to sign a big time impact free agent, but that will cost you down the road. And there aren't many of those guys. In a weird way, there's a sense that big payroll teams paying aging superstars to huge long deals has in fact contributed to a league where a team like the Pirates can go from crummy to best team in baseball in one year. Indeed, of the bottom 5 teams in terms of payroll this year, 3 are competitive! (Pirates, Oakland, and Tampa.) Baltimore is decent for the second year in a row with a payroll square in the middle.

Ladies and gentlemen we seem to have achieved something like parity in MLB, which sucks now that we root for a team that has piles of money to spend. WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAPPEN TO US?

So we're going to get Ruf in right and Domonic in left a lot from here out I guess

That's pretty weird isn't it?

You know who else sucks? John Lannan.

Wonder what the combined WAR is for our offseason moves and how much we paid for it.

Two Youngs, Revere, Adams, Lannan: ~0.7 net WAR for ~$15MM.

Overall, a lot of money for replacement level performance. Helluva off season.

I don't pretend to know the first thing about evaluating talent, but the consensus on this board for all of these moves was pretty negative considering the commonly used most basic metrics for measuring a players output. If everyone here could see it, I really think Rube knew we wouldnt contend until our young guys start contributing in a few years. He can't come out and say we aren't going to be contenders, but deep down he knew we would suck for a few years.

Apparently rube laid out his plan to utley during the negotiations and chase was impressed. So either there's a sound plan or Utley is an idiot too.
