13 PAs just isn't close to enough to do the large amounts of damage Bruntlett's place in lineups did. the team was just really good then so it didn't matter that much. his OPS+ was 45 over a 356 PA sample. he had 19 total XBH and his OBP was .273. he was just good at sucking at a lot of different positions

i dunno where else to put this but i feel like i disagree with tmac and wheels' pitch location assessments a lot. like pretty much on 95% of hits they say it "middle in" or "middle" something, and a lot of times it's more outside and up or inside and down. blows my mind that they don't realize they describe a huge majority of pitch locations in the exact same way every game

Yeah, Ruf's HR on Saturday night was a great example of that. That was a pitch that he had no business hitting out of the park and was a real testament to his strength (and teh bandbox!), but Wheels just called it "middle in" and talked about it like it was a no-brainer Ruf would hit that pitch out.

Here's where PitchFX viewed the location (93.3 mph):

Middle-in, my ass. If anything, if you're Taylor Jordan, that's a first-pitch fastball where you're perfectly happy with Ruf swinging at it.

Excuse me, his exact quote was "oh my, that was right in the middle of the plate."

Wasn't that a swingandamiss location for Ruf earlier in the season? He looks pretty good at the plate although the strikeouts are a concern. Weird that he has a 230 point reverse platoon split so far.

Small samples are a funny game.

Mmmmm. Did look right down the middle. He pulled his arms in some on the swing too.

I won't belabor the point, but that's why the Young acquisition was bad. Young was awful last year, projected to be mediocre at best this year, and we already had a cheap mediocre option at 3B. We didnt need an expensive mediocre (and that's being generous) option at 3B.

This is 2 years in a row that Frandsen has been better. I'd be willing to bet that his WAR/plate appearance next year will be >= Young.

Except you have to adjust for the camera angle. Pitches that are on the inside corner to RH look like they're over the plate when you have that camera out in LCF. A broadcaster with Wheeler's tenure should be familiar with that.

Frandsen is essentially a replacement level bench guy. I value him a bit more than that because I think as a bench guy, he is better than as a starter.

Having a replacement guy on the bench-- or even better an above replacement level bench guy is a good thing.

I guess you could say we could have used that money on something else but really what does one year of six million buy you anymore?

Amaro's off season signings did not do much good for the club this season. In a way, that is all moot. Without a dominant big three at the top of the rotation, this team was sunk. Losing Halladay and Hamels becoming a 20 game loser did in any hope for this season. Signing Young doesn't hurt us for next season. He gave us stuff to laugh at for this year.

I don't want Frandsen as a starter. I'm not sure I even want Galvis or Hernandez as starters. Perhaps not even Ruf. But I like the idea of guys like that for the bench.

We need some good players. Hope Asche is one. I think Revere and Brown is a decent start for an outfield. Utley is either good or hurt. Hope he stays good and doesn't get hurt much for the next two years. Bad old Jimmy is still a decent SS as SS is really weak.

Can the Phils get one more huzzah season from Ryan Howard. It's possible I suppose.

I'm gonna stay hopeful because it's more fun that way.

yeah agree completely... and remember the pitch-fx location is mirrored.

here's a still of the pitch, i would describe it as fairly inside & right on the edge of the plate, which shows Ruf can crush more than just mistakes:

Gotta be Rubin Harazin because Al Amaro sounds like food.

Interesting article on Harazin from 20009. Of course, Harazin actually took the opposite tack and traded for a bunch of big names, then later dumped David Cone for a young Jeff Kent. But they were pretty bad, they did have that in common.
