Don't remember if he was a top name at the time but the Phils passed on Francoeur and took that injured HS troublemaker Cole instead

Yeah, I don't care if the Phillies eat 75% of Cliff's salary if that's what it takes to get premium return for him. It shouldn't, but I'd be willing to do it.

Passan saying Asche being called up soon.

@JeffPassan: Source: Phillies plan on calling up 3B Cody Asche. Points to Michael Young being traded today.

Calling up Cody, that's where.

I agree with this, as it is my thought exactly. If Lee were on the open market, would he really command less than 50 M for 2 years? Or better yet, would he even accept a 2 year deal? How about 62.5 M for 2.5 years, give or take? It is an extremely reasonable number, especially if the Phillies send the money for the buyout if necessary.

Yeah, half the thing about trading Lee is freeing up the money to sign McCann or someone like that. Otherwise screw the Sox.

We picked Kelly Dugan in 2009 and passed on Kenny Diekroeger in 2009 and they've been doing stuff like that for more than 30 years for crying out loud.

Looking forward to all these blog goths begging the Sox not to do it completely reversing course to rip Amaro when it happens

so a lot of you guys are OK with paying $25M for the next two years for a top-level prospect who may or may not be an impact ML player??

We're paying $42M or whatever to a Cuban guy who may or may not be a relief pitcher or #3 starter.

I personally don't want to pay ALL of Cliff's deal, but if it's the difference between a good prospect and a GREAT prospect, I'd throw in the $10M he's owed this year, no problem.

No, for that much the Phils should be getting more in return. What I'm okay with is paying to upgrade the return.

:-D

nah i'd pay upto the buyout amount (12.5) to get boegarts but anything beyond that and red sox can get fucked. like no way they should pay 50% of remaining salary or anything like that

Why do you believe those reports any more than a Boston beat guy saying amaro is insisting on boegarts

I did say "could."

I said "could" because we know Amaro plays this angle the other way. With both Oswalt and pence, he gave better prospects to get a few million back. And they traded Lee the first time partially for money reasons. There's some pattern of focusing on fairly small sums of $ at the expense of larger strategy.

fair enough

i think amaro hasn't had enough opportunities to sell, and that when he did have opportunities, he's gotten decent returns (cliff, vic, pence). let's at least give him this year of selling some shitty pieces before we crucify him on this front, too
