And of course, like Singleton, they're already polishing Bradley's exhibit at Cooperstown. With Greene and Joseph being fitted for Rita's water ice shirts

My favorite line was "30 years later and they still haven't figured out what it takes to be consistently great and maintain it." Yes, it is unbelievable that the Phillies have not figured out how to be consistently great.

On a positive note, I'll bet they'd do a great job at Rita's.

why is there no way? these kinds of trades happen a good bit actually.

1. Because they are already grooming him to take over 3B down the stretch.
2. Because Bogaerts is a special player who they regard very highly and will likely build their team around.
3. Because they have enough other decent prospects that they dont need to trade him to get Lee/Peavy.

I wish it were possible, but its just not.

For every Myers for Shields there are 10 Cliff Lee for Aumonts. Just look at the other 10 times he was dealt.

I don't want a Bradley+ package for Lee. If you can't get Boagerts, then forget it. Keep Lee.

That reminds me. Steaks was on WIP this morning. Nothing much new, unfortunately, because Angelo spent most of the time asking about the Papelbon and Rollins comments

Daric Barton for Mulder, Cargo for Holliday, B .Phillips for Colon, Maybin & co. for Miggy

there are also lots of example of big time guys going for top 20 "cant miss" prospects.

I think that may well be Rube's thinking, too.

Not Crashburn but our old friends at philliesphans wrote:It is so ironic that we are probably going to end up trading our best players for prospects that the Phillies probably had a chance to sign themselves for pennies on the dollar relative to what we are going to pay for them now.

The Phillies decided to save $75K on Workman and saved about $400K by taking Travis Mattair over Will Middlebrooks. They saved $1.4M million taking Kelly Dugan over Wil Myers in 2009. They could have already had Garin Cecchini but instead took Bryan Morgado. It just goes on and on.

The Phillies entire methodology of how to build a franchise is so backwards. 30 years later and they still haven't figured out what it takes to be consistently great and maintain it.

Insufferable. Every other team passed on those guys at least once and in most cases, multiple times.

the money thing is a fair point. they really could've done themselves some favors by spending aggressively in the draft and not falling in line with the commissioner's unenforceable strong arming. I don't get too excited over the "they chose player x over player y" because, like you said, that happens to every team, all the time.

It could all change in a hurry, of course, but is this the most boring trade deadline ever, or what?

Sure, the Phillies shot themselves in the foot for many years by abiding by the slot recommendations. But it also assumes that in each case, the Phillies thought the other player was better than the one they selected but chose not to take them solely for money. It's very easy to look back now and say they should have spent an extra 400k and signed Middlebrooks over Mattair but everything is a lot simpler with the benefit of hindsight.

Are there any memorable draftees the Phillies didn't take that everyone was upset about but ended up with someone better? I'm guessing there are examples but I never hear about them.

The Cardinals don't talk much before making moves. I'd have to guess that if they knew that Lee was on the market, that they would come in with an offer. That one may be better than Boston's. Also the Rangers are dangerously close to slipping out of PO contention. They just might bend and serve up Profar and an arm like Ogando to get Lee and Young.

Even after getting Garza? If so, then sold. Though I would also try and get Odor, mostly because I want to see what this board could do with that.
