1) they see him as a lee replacement of sorts and are going to deal lee for a potential impact bat. go with hamels and 4 guys who are #3-#4 types while focusing on revamping the offense.
2) they envision a hamels-lee-mag-kendrick-pettibone rotation breaking faces next year and are sticking with the pitching trumps all mantra. utley comes back, asche takes over at third, they trade for middle of the road corner of bat.
3) they view gonzalez as next years first round pick. they're probably not bad enough to get a top 10 pick, so they'll have to forfeit it if they want to go out and get a guy like mccann. what they have to spend in money they get back in immediate availability.
4) rube's just throwing #$!&@ at the wall and still doesn't have any idea.

Or trade Thome for two prospects -- both of whom have potential at least. Or extend Hamels. Or sign some Cuban Defector pitching stud. Or sign a Carlos Tocci who is playing A ball and holding his own as a 17 year old. Or draft some real good players. Or sign a Maikel Franco.
Doesn't really do anything or have a plan or anything.
I'm not sure he will make great moves. Or even if he makes good moves that they will work. Because team construction is a funny game. But he will do stuff. That's been his MO. Bold moves.
