Where's Ruben Amaro? (Phillies random thread)

Multiple teams are making a late run at the Philadelphia Phillies with offers for pitcher Cliff Lee as Wednesday's trade deadline nears, baseball sources told ESPN.com Friday.

Although Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. declined to address the extent of other teams' interest in Lee, he said he's keeping an open mind on Lee and numerous other Philadelphia players who might generate interest at the deadline.

"I can't sit here and say I'm not going to trade Chase (Utley), or Cliff, or Michael Young or Chooch (Carlos Ruiz), or any of these guys. Some guys are less tradeable than others. But I think I owe it to us as an organization to listen. If teams are going to come at us and suggest things, I'm not going to turn off the faucet and stop listening to them."

If anything turning off a faucet should help him listen.

i think Utley gets signed to an extension. Chooch probably doesnt have good value. Young is the guy most likely on the move. Can't see Lee getting traded unless some team is desperate. His value will still be high in the offseason, but im also fine with going into next year with him. Who is currently in the market for an ace? After the rangers got garza, it would have to be a team that needs a big arm to make a run, so unless they buy high, ill hang onto him

If we're going to contend next year, we need to hang onto Lee, Utley, Paps and Chooch. Rube should probably think about extending MY and maybe Nix.

Tigers seem concerned about Verlander. Package Lee and Paps.

The best trade fit for Lee is probably Boston, and I imagine that he would waive his NTC to go there in a second. I presume that a package of Bradley, Webster, and others would get it done.

Heard they are going after Peavy with Middlebrooks being one of the players going in return

Wait a second. hold the phone. Faucet? Farrah Fawcett? Married to Lee Majors.

Lee pitches in the Majors.

We're trading Cliff Lee.

Simple.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Here's my take: Lee and Utley are having really good years, yet the team is sub-.500. That means there are serious issues at other positions. If you think those issues can be addressed in such a way that the Phils can be contenders next year, you keep Lee and extend Utley. OTOH, if you think there are so many issues it's unlikely you can address them well enough to contend next year, then you get what you can while you can for Lee and Utley and think about 2015 (when Utley and Lee will both be 36) and beyond.

Exactly.

Only problem is, Farrah is dead

@DennisDeitch: If I were a betting man ... AND I AM ... I would say a Cliff Lee without a stiff neck lands in St. Louis.

The cardinals have more than enough high end prospects to get a Lee trade done. Hopefully Amaro is willing to send a little money for a killer return.
