Dom Brown: Phillies Random Thoughts

Mariners have scuffled with the closer and have lost some games because of it. Baltimore and Detroit. Tampa too right?

A Closer is not a high priority unless you don't have one. Then you have big troubles.

Ben Revere was horrible in April finishing with a ,200 average and an OPS so low you can't even measure it.

But since then he has hit .311 with a .354 OBP and an OPS of .715. Also stole 10 bases with only 2 CS.

Not great but there is value there.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

the Phillies, the team we're talking about in this thread, have plenty of troubles even though they have a good closer. I'm just not buying the "Boston must be regretting not paying a shitton of money for Jonathan Papelbon now!" idea because it's clear they wanted to move in a younger, cheaper direction there. They may have wanted Papelbon back for a certain price, but determined he was not worth what the market would dictate. This isn't all that controversial an idea, that a team would hold a philosophy that devalues a role on their team at the benefit of other places to invest those resources. Or that maybe they don't want to re-sign their expensive homegrown closer.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

If the Phils had a bad closer this season they'd be in danger of being relegated to the International League or something.

You're right that not wanting to spend big dollars on a closer is a fine idea.

But I'm not against having an elite closer you can pretty much count on either.

The latter is true but their bullpen was a circus last year, and there's rumors of them seeking a closer in July

Giving up Reddick plus for Bailey looked terrible last year, and Bard to the rotation was a disaster. Obviously there's upside to younger/cheaper, but it's also a big risk

Cafardo:

The Phillies believe there are at least three teams — Red Sox, Tigers, and Cardinals — that may have some interest in Papelbon at the trade deadline. It’s no secret the Phillies are scouting those teams with Papelbon in mind. Ruben Amaro Jr. came out and said last week that he’s not ready to “blow up” the Phillies. And while the Philadelphia GM is not crazy about moving Cliff Lee, Papelbon could provide the “retooling” with younger players the Phillies need.

If it's the Cards I hope we get Mike Blazek included in the deal. We could call him "Blazer." That would be kewl.

It's time to blow it up. Amaro can go fuck himself.

Can we deal you first?

You don't deal this early, you wait til the deadline because team's will pay more.

don't think that is true, just rare for teams to deal this early.

I've never accepted that logic. You can deal now and offer the other team an extra 6 weeks of the players services, that has value. I said all this last year too and probably got the same response.

i think the problem is teams haven't decided if they're sellers or buyers yet. it's rare that a bubble team will decide ALL IN at this juncture.
