Productive Outs - Phillies Random Thoughts

It's interesting how Charlie and Ruben always seem to word their comments about the team a certain way. If you ask Charlie on the bullpen, he'll tell you that the bullpen needs "to be straightened out" whereas Ruben would simply reply the relievers need to "pitch better".

I noticed it again today.

it's a pretty common occurrence in sports for gms/owners to try to subtly pass blame by saying they need their players to perform better and for coaches to say they need to "fix" things.

Amaro willing to make changes

“Our offense has to come around and be a little more consistent,” the Phillies general manager said Friday. “And if it is not, then we are going to have to figure out ways we can make it more consistent. I think it can be better.”

He has been disappointed with the Phillies production all season. But Friday, before a series against the Cincinnati Reds, Amaro would sit in the dugout and vent. While not absolving the pitching for any part in the Phils’ 19-22 start, he made it clear that he has one eye on the batting order, the other on his list of minor-league prospects. And if the Phillies continue to make scoring four runs seem like an achievement, then he will make changes.

What kind? “Probably minor-league players,” Amaro said. “Probably won’t be trades. At least right now it won’t be. I don’t think there is anybody available at this time. It’s kind of too early for a lot of clubs to be even making moves. If there is something that can be done, we would consider it.” “Right now, we have to be patient and see if Delmon Young starts swinging it, and Ryan Howard is going to have to start swinging it. If those guys do, then we’ll be OK. If they don’t, then we will have to figure out what we are going to do.”

“The offense has to perform,” Amaro said. “Talent-wise, they can. Performance-wise, not so far. I mean, that’s obvious. Talent-wise, they just have to start doing it.”

(edited out most of the article except for most of Amaro's quotes)

They're going to eventually have to bring Darin Ruf up. He's just too good a hitter to keep in the minors, particularly with how poorly the Phillies have done against lefty starters.

Delmon Young is simply not doing enough. I suspect his days in the starting line-up are numbered.

It sounds like he's basically saying that young and howard need to get going or Ruf is going to get some of their ABs. He's the only minor league hitter who could make an impact at a position of need. Who else would he be talking about?

Cesar Hernandez is hitting well at LV. He has speed and a glove. Play him at 2B and Utley to the OF or vice versa.

The day they move either Utley or a rookie 2B to the OF in mid-season is the day pigs get wings.

Moving Utley to the outfield is a great idea if your goal is to marginalize value.

He's just talking nonsense. There is no one else besides Ruf and there is no position in jeopardy besides the 3rd OF spot.

In theory, yes, but if it brought another live bat into the lineup, who cares?

Not gonna happen this year though

First time he's ever called Howard out, fwiw. On top of Manuel sitting him against lefties a little more than in the past

I'd just as soon let him play 3b next year. He has better range than Young, I'm not sure his arm would hold up but it would at least be interesting to watch.

They seemed to abandon that idea quickly, but who knows. Hopefully Asche will play his way into it. Maybe Young would come back cheap as part of a platoon initially

FWIW Ruf has an .849 OPS vs. RHP this year and all 5 of his HR. If you're going to bring him IMO it would be a waste just to platoon him against LHP. Either give the guy a shot or not.

Well if it's partly/mostly to replace Delmon, he'd have the opportunity to play his way into an everyday role

Howard's descent into worthlessness is beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I really hope he turns it around in a hurry.

450 PA since his return last year and he has 20 HR, a .289 OBP and 43 runs scored. Putting aside his contract, he's been a sub-replacement level 1B for nearing a full year. He's not even Garrett Jones. Ugh

This year. In the minors. In May.

I'm holding out hope because of that hot streak a couple weeks ago. We saw it's at least possible still.

I'd say the problem is he's always behind in the count, but his numbers up 3-1 or in full counts are terrible.
