It's a concern, of course, but the primary examples are the Pence and Victorino deals, which most here seemed to like, and the Thome deal to a smaller extent. Comes down to the scouting of the prospects and then the negotiation of the deals

That looks real bad, but:

1. It wasn't part of a rebuild and was almost certainly owner-dictated and needing to happen very quickly

2. Realistically, they weren't gonna deal him to the Yankees (who had just beaten them) or a high-powered team they could face in the 2010 playoffs

3. All the Lee deals look real bad

I guess I'm not sure why I would conclude that the type of young player that Amaro would target in rebuilding trades would be any different than (1) the type of young player they have targeted in drafts over the last 5-7 years, and (2) the type of players they have signed to fill out around the core of the team. I don't want either of those.

Here's an interesting question. If you're the Phillies, do you offer a team like Seattle Ryan Howard and about half of the money from his contract to attempt to unload him? Seattle's shown a willingness to overpay before.

That's plenty reasonable, but now they need a new core, with pitching (now and future) far and away the position of strength. We'll see

I think given how the Phillies operate, firing Ruben might take awhile. However, David Montgomery has to be old, so maybe you could bounce Amaro upstairs.
