If you're gonna say we were lucky to win 102 games in a season because we were fortunate enough to have a bunch of young great players and have some moves work out then you could say it about almost any team. These teams were really good for a reason; they had things go their way.

The teams that took out the Phillies in the recent NL playoff series that they were in had one thing in common-proactive managers. Both Bochy and LaRusso schooled Manuel in those match ups. There is no doubt in my mind that had the Phillies been managed by either of those two instead of Manuel, there would have been three WS pennants flying down at CBP.

no reason not to bat him 2nd.

I think there is something to how those guys managed in the playoffs, especially how they'd have a quick hook for a struggling starter (and somehow the scrub relievers all put up zeroes) but c'mon. LaRussa blew the Ben Francisco game and we were two feet from winning that series on the Ibanez flyout

The old saying of " If ifs and buts were candy and nuts...." The fact of the matter is that Manuel had the better roster in both cases and lost the series. I realize that there are times that a manager pushes a button and it fails but then again there are some successes as well. Doing nothing is all too often a losing proposition. Its the same story of when he was with the Indians. There are times when the manager has to stir things up to make things happen. Charlie doesn't do it and his teams lose both here in Philly and when he was in Cleveland. Do people realize all of the talent that he has had at his disposal as a manager and yet he has only one WS championship to show for it? That isn't accidental.
The best thing going forward for the Phillies is that Sandberg is here and ready to take charge when Manuel falls on is face again.
