What's desirable about Span is that he's similarly as productive a player as any of the other available CF's (unless you think Michael Bourn is going to continue to be a 6 win player into his 30's), is younger than all of them and is paid less than half of any of them.

Third base remains another area that the Phils would like to upgrade. They are looking for a short-term fit as not to block the path of prospect Cody Asche. Free-agent Kevin Youkilis is an obvious fit. Veteran Texas infielder Michael Young could also be a fit if some hurdles could be cleared. Young has a no-trade clause and is signed for 2013 at $16 million. Sources say the Phillies have interest in Young, but the player would have to waive his no-trade clause and the Rangers would have to pick up a chunk of his salary. Young has spent his entire 12-year career with the Rangers.

Stop being so negative. If we get him he'll be only the first of several great moves to come. We already signed Hamels. The Braves lol are paying Upton a lot of money. At least we don't have that coke fiend Hamilton. Maybe we can get Swisher too. Blah blah blah.

Young had a -1.4 WAR last year. He's 36. He had a .298 wOBA. He can't play ANY position. He makes $16m.

Doesn't the value offset when you have to trade a top 50 prospect to get him though?

I mean, I'm all for getting better, younger, cheaper players, but when I can get a similarly productive player and all he costs me is money, I prefer that. I love payroll flexibility and all, but I think that good prospects are a far more valuable commodity than payroll flexibility.
