I'm not reading his article, but does anyone mention how the Phils have enjoyed a unique merchandise run over the past five years? That there were major events that would cause people to buy NEW merchandise?

Hell, even if the 2012 Phillies were on pace for 102 wins again, their sales likely would've dropped unless there was a major midseason acquisition or a WS title.
