little twitter debate amongst guys i follow about whether they should have called up ruf. what's BSG's take? i'm sure it's too early for him but yeah it would have been neat especially since we're a long long shot at best for the playoffs

While minor league standings shouldn't normally dictate moves, this is case where I'd let him stay with Reading and play leftfield for every game of their August playoff push. Then, call him up in September. He can take Mayberry's at-bats.

you have a few DFA candidates, obviously. luna, frandsen, jc ramirez, mini mart

but you also need to replace polanco, wigginton and pierre on the active roster. additionally, you have to protect guys for the rule 5 draft.

if my calculations are correct, that is all prep guys 18 and under when drafted in 2008 and all college guys 19 and older drafted in 2009, as well as latam signings who were 18 and under in 2008. i think this is the list

Ruf makes sense - only problem is that he hasn't been playing the OF enough. He was at 1B last night (while hitting another HR I might add). I've been thinking that if Gillies is healthy come September and playing at the same level he has this season, he should definitely get a call up to see how he responds to the big leagues. He's another cheap OF option that will give us at least Pierre performance in year 1 and perhaps better.

This is another aspect of trading vs. hoarding prospects. You can't hang onto all of them as long as you want. Converting several minor leaguers into a smaller number of major leaguers allows the team to protect more of the remaining prospects. Obviously they would be giving up the ones that are likely to be no-brainers for protection but there are probably a few guys they would like to protect but might not be able to if they don't trade anyone.

I see no need to keep Luna over anybody.

It's most likely observational bias, but I thought Luna was strong for us this year- especially with the glove at both corner infield positions. What's the real truth??

bastardo has a 7.65 era at home this season in 20 innings. 25 k and 15 bb. on the road he has a 2.76 era in 16 innings, with 25 k and 6 bb.
