I think they want Charlie to stay, but Chuck knows 2013 is it. The contract is done after then. The question is... does Sandberg get an interview elsewhere this off-season, and if so, does he accept a job no matter what? I think the Phillies have been protecting him for years and they will match/make him manager if any team tries to get in there. If it means firing Manuel, I think they would do it. That could get really dicey. I think the optimal plan was Chuck goes through 2013 and Sandberg takes over in 2014, but after this season I would totally understand a change, and I would be ready for it. I would like to see a lot of guys stay though, that's the thing. Dubee seems to do a good job. Billmeyer seems to do a good job. Mackanin seems to be good at being laid back and hipsterish. I think all of those guys fit in with Sandberg. Except Greg Gross, whom I would be itching to replace in a second.

He's been in the organization for 2 seasons (1 off season).

Charlie's not going anywhere. If Ryne gets an offer, he's gone. No big deal.

It's somewhat surprising he didn't get an offer from the Cubs last off-season, or the Cardinals. I just don't think the Phillies want him to go anywhere (again).

I don't want Choo; it'll water down Carlos Ruiz's brand equity

If they bat Ruiz then Choo in the order, that's exactly what they'll be.

In reference to the thread title, July turned into one of the worst months in the last 10 years. Hard to believe that happened, but it did. Pretty pumped for the rest of the year though.

it's so strange that the Phillies are such a bad team but have so many tradable pieces that other teams want.

Remember two months ago when they said we didn't have anything other teams would want?

No Phillies tonight. What to do instead? Could always jam knives beneath my fingernails.

I feel so bad for those Phillies reporters having to watch sports all the time. Must be hell.

They make like 30k a year or something ridiculous like that. It genuinely is a pretty shitty job.

If it is so awful making 30K watching sporting events and writing about them then why do so many people do it for free or nearly free?

I'd guess that Frank makes more than 30K.

In the Philadelphia market, you are making alot more than 30k. You get 30k if your in bumfuck Idaho.

Truth. Plus Frank Fitzpatrick's been writing forever, so he's undoubtedly in a pretty decent pay bracket.

It's even worse for the new guys. They know what they're getting into, and they still whine about it. As a journalism student who wants to write about sports, being a beat writer for a major team is probably the 2nd-highest tier you can shoot for, with the highest being a national writer (Rosenthal) or a columnist. Some of them also pretty clearly would rather be on TV, and think being the beat writer is the springboard to the next level. In most cases, it is not.
