I would have not given that kid a ball out of spite. I probably would have held it just out of reach a few times just to taunt him. Then as I walked out of the park I would have thrown it in a trash can.

Next time I go to a game and someone nearby gets a ball, I'm going to start wailing and holding out my hands demanding the ball. See how the other people in my section like it. See if I get on YES and gain the sympathies of announcers and Deadspin.

PHdave definitely gaining lots of points. Raising a kid to believe that whining when you don't get your way gets rewarded is TFBS.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Slightly better I'd say, a debacle can be turned around, you're screwed if it's a fiasco.

I'm glad someone else had the same opinion as me. I mean, fuck those people, they were oblivious and clearly in a second-marriage-or-affair-honeymoon, but fuck that kid. You aren't going to catch every baseball that comes near you, and you aren't going to snag every gold-digger who likes to go to baseball games. keep cryin'.

While that kid was really young and this (probably) doesn't apply...

As someone who has attended somewhere in the range of 700 minor league games and over 1100 games including the Majors and college, let me tell you, if you see a kid that is over 5-6 asking for a ball, there is a 95% chance (s)he already has gotten a ball in their life and probably >50% chance that (s)he has gotten over 10. I pretty much only give balls to kids who are sitting quietly with their parents and generally female.

I've never gotten a ball in my life. You know why? I never went to a baseball game when I didn't fucking understand what was happening. I was nearly 7 years old when I first attended a ballgame. We were, at best, in the 300 level of the Vet. Kid can get over it. No one is entitled to a goddamn foul ball. Foul balls are earned, and so be it if a 50-year-old creeper wants it more than a young father bringing his toddler to his first Rangers game.

My bigger problem is the guy taking a picture of the women holding the ball. That is so fucking stupid.

I'm on board with the "screw the little kid" meme. I went to hundreds of games before getting a ball, and even then it was a spring training game. Part of the joy of getting a ball is knowing how hard it is to get it. That kid will never really know what it's like to get a ball because it was just handed to him. He'll probably use it on a rainy day to hit around in his back yard, ruining it. Meanwhile, my ball is on my bookshelf

And that's putting aside the other evil in this, which is rewarding a child for yelling and screaming over something that should include neither.
