The Phillies have thrown 19 shutouts this year after throwing 21 shutouts last year. They are two shutouts from tossing 20-plus in back-to-back years.

How many staffs have done that since baseball lowered the mound after 1968?

That would be none.

Do the Phillies now have the best offense in the NL?

Dave Cameron: Not even close.

Not even close update:

Phillies are now 4th in runs scored per game with 4.5 (STL:4.7, CIN:4.7, COL: 4.6). They have scored 32 fewer runs than StL in 2 fewer games.

They are second in OPS post all start break, first in slugging. 3rd in overall runs scored. I'd like to know who Cameron thinks is the best offense in the NL now and who is close.

The rankings are still about the same with slight variations in the #s. But things are trending towards the Phillies moving up from 4th before the end of the season.

They have averaged 4.55 runs per game over the course of the season. If the teams above them all averaged their season average # of runs/game, the Phillies would have to average 5.33 runs per game to tie for the top spot.

The Phillies have averaged 4.93 since Utley came back. They have averaged 5.59 since the Pence acquisition and averaged 5.5 runs per game in August. The next closest NL team in August was Colorado with 4.93 runs per game.

So it is unlikely that the Phillies would overtake all of the teams ahead of them in runs per game before the end of the season. But it is possible and if certain trends continue, it could happen. Unfortunately the average age of their hitters is 31.5 which is dead last in the NL so not even close.

I have to admit I didn't expect the offense to come around this much. I figured they would do a bit better, but not anything like this.

Shows how much I know.

Remember the big who we gonna get at the trade deadline stuff. Here's how some of the guys gotten and not gotten have done since July 31st (or since acquired):

Mr. Protection: PA=123; .327/.398/.570 = .968 OPS; OPS + = 160. 7 HRs.

Bourn: 125 PAs;.286/.333/.339 = .673; OPS + = 87; 8 SB, 5 CS (wow). Not sure how many WARs or UZRs.

Cuddyer: 69 PAs; .242/.261/.455 = .716 OPS.

Beltran: 80 PAs; .260/.288/.377 = .664 OPS; 86 OPS +

Reynolds: 120 PAs; .228/.267/.491 = .758 OPS.

Francouer: 130 PAs; .311/.354/.492 = 846 OPS

Shouldda got Frenchy!!!

Per mlb.com transactions page, Michael Taylor has been recalled from Sacramento by the A's. Also per various tweets Andrew Carpenter has been claimed off waivers by Padres.

definitely more WARs than Pence. I think Bourn being better than Pence is somehow worked into the formula for WAR.

Carpenter will get a ring... there should be a hierarchy... Carpenter maybe gets a charm bracelet... Zagurski a tongue piercing

Sorry guys, but the Phillies are sure to lose tomorrow - because I get to watch some of the game (for the first time since last Friday).
