I don't recall that, but I'm not sure where I put my keys, either. Retrosheet has a year-by-year listing of transactions, if that might help you track it down.

it appears i definitely made this up in my head. maybe it was a rumored deal that never came to fruition.

Either way, baseball-reference now has a nifty way to check

Mauser for Mason. July 3rd 1993. Each pitched for their new teams on July 4th.

That is one awesom B-R feature, phhan.

Also -- Big Ben Rivera!!!!!

Phils stole both Kruk and Joe LeFebvre from the Pads.

They've never traded anyone any good to the Padres. The best probably was Chris James.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Somehow they got the Pads to take Carlton Loewer and Adam Eaton that one year :-D

Imagine how many wins they'd have if they weren't so terrible.

Or if they had a RH bat and more elite reliefers.

And if they cut down on the strikeouts.

March 25, 1981: The Atlanta Braves traded Gary Matthews to the Philadelphia Phillies for Bob Walk.

Never knew that's how we got him. That's hilariously lopsided in our favor. I assume they thought he was good cause he won a WS game.

Polanco was unavailable for the better part of a week before going on the DL, and the team got along just fine with Valdez, Martinez, Rollins and Utley manning 2nd, short and 3rd. I don't think they're in a hurry to make a decision on Francisco or Mayberry, so I am thinking they'll send down Orr.

Walk was not bad in 1980. He had a 7.68 ERA in June and was about to be sent down. He had one more chance -- a make or break start vs. the Expos. He pitched well and stayed with the big club and pitched pretty well the rest of the season. He was only 23.

It was indeed a lopsided trade though as Walk was terrible with the Braves. They released him 1n 1984 but he went on to become a pretty good starter for the Pirates for a long time.

The reason I remember so much about Walk was I was at that make or break game:

It's pretty amazing how absolutely awful Werth has been this year. He blows.

Meanwhile, Chad Drubin has an ERA of like 7.

JA HApp is basically the worst pitcher in MLB

Burrell was a disaster in TB

Brunt is out of baseball.

Juan Castro retired.

Myers has a -.1 WAR

Chan Ho where are you?

Question will be moot once Ruben lands Ubaldo.

Feliz last seen in Atlantic League.

Taguchi last seen on boat to Japan.

Iguchi also last seen on same boat.

Here is something impressive:

If the Phillies win 98 or more games this year, that will mark the fifth straight year in which they have increased their win total. That will be a franchise record. The Phillies have improved their win total 4 years in a row three times: the current streak, in which they have gone from 85 wins in 2006 to 97 wins last year; from 1972-1976 (59->71->80->86->101); and from 1883-1887 (17->39->56->71->75).

What makes it impressive to me is that the Phillies started from such a relatively high number of wins on their current streak (85). it's one thing to improve 4 years in a row when you begin at 59 wins or (gulp) 17. But from 85? Damn impressive.

What makes it cool to me is that, despite the fact that the team won the World Series 2008 and hasn't since, and despite the fact that their players have gotten older, the ever-increasing win total makes the feeling of ascendancy continue.

I realize what stopped the ascendancy in the previous run (1972-1976) was the 101 wins the Phils put on the board; hard to top, and had the Phillies done that in 2008, it wouldn't diminsh what they are doing now. But the WAY they've won a little more each year has really helped them, I think, to keep up the idea that there is ever more to come from this team, whereas jumping from 86 wins to 101 back in the 1970s was part of the team's problem: they had nowhere to go but down.

And the 1886 team played fewer games than the 1887 one, so they actually went down in percentage.
