People also forget how Manuel was on the verge of being fired in '07 because they kept losing. Where was the winning culture then? They went through bad slumps in recent years too (ask Milt Thompson).

If they had a couple bad bounces and lose 2 more games to the Mets in '08 they would have missed the playoffs altogether. Then everyone would be talking about how the Phils can't get over the hump because of their losing culture, blah blah blah.

Looks like we can line up Halladay/Lee/Hamels against the Braves in Philly.

Phillies starters ended June with a 1.96 ERA. They are the first rotation since the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves in 1992 to finish a full month with an ERA under 2.00, STATS LLC said.

10. Cole Hamels (8.554) averages more strikeouts per nine innings than Roger Clemens (8.552).

In a list of meaningless little stats, this one might be the most meaningless … how about having to go to the third number behind the decimal point to find this one? But I kind of like it because it is a reminder than Cole Hamels is not just a terrific pitcher, he’s a dominating one. I can remember on at least three occasions this year hearing Hamels referred to as a “crafty” pitcher. There is absolutely nothing wrong with lefty pitchers being called crafty — I actually think it’s one of the great compliments in sports — but it doesn’t fit Hamels. He pumps his fastball into the mid-90s and destroys hitters with that devastating change-up. He may have a little craftiness in him, but that doesn’t describe him. He’s overpowering.

Man, WIP was really, really trying to make a controversy out of Cole coming out of the game yesterday. I know, I know. but I barely got to listen to 2 minutes of the game today at work and could rarelycheck into it online and was really hoping to hear some highlights or at least share in a good vibe.

Instead I have to listen to this "I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin", shit. Dutch was stalwart in his support, but everyone else was just begging for someone to call in and rip "tinman" Hamels.

so, so glad I don't leave within earshot of that bollix. They would drag me into their mire, and I'd never get anything done.

Game 5 of the 1980 World Series is on CSN right now.

I never saw this game when it happened. We were at the Flyers game that day.

The main takeaway I get from this game is that Willie Aikens was the worst defensive first baseman I have ever seen.
