I've had some old friends of mine who work in the underground bunker, give decoding Amarospeak into plain English a try. I mean, translating Amarospeak phrase like "We're not making any trades" into the English "We're making a big, huge blockbuster trade" is pretty easy.

But I asked them to translate the above. They determined the key words were tic-tac; whale; and Micky Mantle.

Tic-tacs are a minty treat. So is gum. Wrigley makes gum -- Wrigley Field is in Chicago. The Chicago Whales were that city's entry in the Federal League. Mickey Mantle had a great year in 1961. That was the year of the Cuban Missile Crises. He was 29.

Chicago White Sox SS Alexi Ramirez is nicknamed the Cuban Missile. He is 29.

The Phils gonna trade a couple of prospects who will never be heard from again for Alexi Ramirez. The White Sox will also give Amaro 9 million dollars in gold bullion.

I can't wait.

Phils now have 3 closers on DL.

Nice. We're going to close the SHIT out of games when they all come back.

Nice to see he's still doing the ridiculous "Ibáñez" spelling though. What an incredible tool.

I saw someone else spell it that way as well. I hope they didn't put in a filter for that as well.

edit: Wow, they DO have a filter changing Ibanez to Ibáñez. lol. Even if you type it the fully correct way of "Ibañez" it changes it. Hahaha.

A lot of you seem to already have knowledge of Raul's preferences, but here's an interesting article from The Seattle Times in 2000.

Yesterday, the Mariners organization said Seattle, too, would begin taking pains to ensure that all televised games, Safeco Field scoreboard listings and uniforms would reflect the proper spelling of home and visiting Latino players' names....

As for Ibanez, you may note that in the previous column, a tilde was placed over the "n" and an accent over the "a." Today, those marks are banished altogether. Why?

In good conscience, I have to report that the Mariners last week consulted the Manhattan-born Ibanez about the apparently missing accent marks and tilde from his name. And his response was that his family has never used any.
