Oswalt has a bad back. Not breaking news but this explanation from the doctor guys at BP is pretty good:

Roy Oswalt, PHI (Bulging disc)

The Phillies removed all doubt about whether or not Oswalt would make his next start by placing him on the disabled list for a bulging disc. As we discussed in Friday's Collateral Damage, Oswalt's low back injury history is nothing new. His bulging and herniated discs have been recognized for several years, as has an overall diagnosis of degenerative disc disease.

Complicating the difficulties caused by the disc injuries is a thickening of the facet joints, which is a nice way of saying that Oswalt has early arthritis in that area of the spine. Early arthritis is not unheard of for someone of Oswalt's age and activity level, but it’s not normally quite as limiting as it is for Oswalt at this stage of his career.

Oswalt is relieved that his season isn't over yet, but he’s hardly out of the woods. Doctors are recommending a regimen of different injections and physical therapy aimed at decreasing the inflammation while simultaneously strengthening his core, but that may not be enough to decrease his symptoms. The problem is that it's not as simple as prescribing a treatment and waiting for the area to heal, since the damage is already done. The herniating and bulging discs will not get noticeably smaller, and the arthritis around his facet joints will not go away. When Oswalt does return, he’ll be at risk of aggravating the injury every time out.

Some stuff about Madson from the same place as the above. Good thing we don't really need a closer since all of them get hurt all the time:

Ryan Madson, PHI (Right hand inflammation)

In another unusual diagnosis, Madson was deemed to have inflammation of the small muscles in the hand, caused by being struck by a comebacker on May 20th. After experiencing ongoing soreness while throwing pitches in the wake of the incident, he had an MRI of his hand, which was negative.

Continued pain while gripping certain pitches led him to a hand specialist, who discovered the inflammation. The affected muscles, while small, are invaluable for fine motor skills. Without proper functioning of these muscles, pitchers are unable to grip the ball properly and impart the correct spin on the ball.

Anti-inflammatory medications were prescribed, and Madson also received an injection to knock out the inflammation faster. He will throw a side session tomorrow to see how his hand feels, after which we'll have a better grasp on the timeline for his return.

That's scary considering he said himself his performance recently has been affected by knowing the injury was there. Looking at the schedule, I'd be happy with 3-4 good starts out of him in the Cin-Mil-Atl-StL stretch so we're not having Worley/Kendrick all the time while we try to clinch.

I can't argue the intangibles stuff because it's, as you said, like trying to nail jello to a wall. This point though, I do have a tiny quibble with.

In Abreu's last full year RF had a collective .862 OPS, in 2006 with half a year of Abreu we had a .816 OPS out there.

2007 was the first full year sans Abreu. That year, the Phils RFers put up a cumulative .791 OPS. In 2008, that number was .756, albeit with wretched Jenkins getting a large chunk of playing time out there. 2009 was the year where WERTZ really took over, and RF that year for the Phils had a cumulative .898 OPS.

So yea, we did eventually wind up with better offensive production out there but that wasn't exactly the motivating factor for moving Abreu, just a happy coincidence.

As an aside, it's really #$&! cool clicking through BR and seeing WORLD CHAMPIONS underneath the data for the 08 phils.

Thanks. I was just kinda responding to the apple/orange thing regarding Carter and Abreu and got carried away.

Your point is a good one but don't forget DeLucci hit like a madman after Abreu left; Victorino also got vital PT after the trade and the defense in RF improved regardless of who was out there.

Speaking of nailing jello to a wall, you might even make an argument that trading Abreu led to Victorino establishing himself which led to Rowand being expendable and also giving Werth an opportunity to take the RF job.

And we got extra draft picks from letting Rowand go which improved our minor league depth which led to us trading for CLIFF LEE and Halladay.

Plus, CLIFF LEE signed back here because of the great clubhouse atmosphere which all started when we traded away Abreu. Before that all we could get as pitchers were Eric Milton and that big fat Millwood guy.

Now THAT's some chemistry talking there.

Asked about making a trade, Amaro again put the onus on the team’s current players to start producing.

“It would be like giving a Tic Tac to a whale,” he said. “These guys need to produce. I could add Mickey Mantle and it’s not going to have any effect if the guys we already have don’t hit.”

Amaro is always thinking about whales

I love how all the other posters keep spelling it right and he still doesn't notice, along with all the facts backing up other peoples opinions. Not to mention his on-going man-crush on Frenchie.

Aside from the Larry Bowa's biggest fan (I think his name was jvb or something like that), I have never encountered anyone so fact-proof as CD.

I've had some old friends of mine who work in the underground bunker, give decoding Amarospeak into plain English a try. I mean, translating Amarospeak phrase like "We're not making any trades" into the English "We're making a big, huge blockbuster trade" is pretty easy.

But I asked them to translate the above. They determined the key words were tic-tac; whale; and Micky Mantle.

Tic-tacs are a minty treat. So is gum. Wrigley makes gum -- Wrigley Field is in Chicago. The Chicago Whales were that city's entry in the Federal League. Mickey Mantle had a great year in 1961. That was the year of the Cuban Missile Crises. He was 29.

Chicago White Sox SS Alexi Ramirez is nicknamed the Cuban Missile. He is 29.

The Phils gonna trade a couple of prospects who will never be heard from again for Alexi Ramirez. The White Sox will also give Amaro 9 million dollars in gold bullion.

I can't wait.
