Cosart jumps to #18 from #34 on Keith Law's new top 25.

Singleton jumps to #21 from #27. Brown drops off from #3 because he's in the majors.

In the NL, I'm not sure you can carry a player who truly can't play the field, and if Thome cannot, the Phils would be better off going in another direction.

Also, I am guessing that Thome, a regular for almost his entire career, needs to get regular ABs in order to be effective. Stairs was used to pinch hitting when he was brought here.

Disagree. We're talking about a post-waiver, pre-Sep. 1 acquisition, where you can carry him on the expanded roster for the stretch run and you can carry an extra bat in the playoffs because you should only need an 11 man staff. They don't need him to play the field.

Right, but what if the Twins find a taker before July 31st? Like, say, if the Mariners, Athletics, or hell Rangers or Angels want him?

Thome, I would imagine, might draw interest from a number of clubs as a DH for a stretch run, and clubs that aren't usually in on stuff like this even, because he is cheap. Hard to imagine he makes it past the July 31st deadline with the Twins.

And, come to think of it, there is absolutely no chance Thome clears waivers so the Phillies could get him after July 31st. Since the Phils will likely still have the best record in the NL after July 31st, Thome would, in effect, have to clear entirely for the Phils to get him. Not gonna happen.

So they can ONLY get him, really, by trading for him before July 31st. Don't see that happening either, because as the deadline approaches the market for Thome will heat up (even if he makes sense for fewer teams as the season wears on), so the Twins have an incentive to wait. I don't think it's worth a bidding war for Thome, nor do I think being proactive and getting him now is either likely (why would the Twins unload him fast?) or wise (you can't carry a guy for 3-4 months who cannot play the field).

Thought I was going to see two Halladay starts on the road in person this week - yesterday at Nationals, Sunday at Pirates. I guess with the Worley move, Halladay pitches Saturday. So I get Lee on Sunday - not bad.

BTW, if Halladay does go on Saturday, he will pitch against his protege Charlie Morton.

Win/win for me either way, although the idea of Halladay facing off with Morton seemed kind of cool.

With Halladay throwing 111 pitches yesterday, and seeming like he labored a bit, I'm glad if he's getting the extra day.

I can believe that. I sat thru the whole game (okay, I spent an inning under the shade on the concourse) and in the course of nine innings drank a liter of water, 20 oz of Sprite and 20 oz of Powerade - and still had a killer thirst heading home on the Metro. It was a brutal day and hats off to all the players who got thru it, including Domonic Brown, who played in long sleeves for some reason.

Gload can't play the field now and they're doing ok with him (in terms of the lost fielder not hurting them). And they're at a disadvantage if they don't have DH in the World Series. Not sure how good Thome is though TBH.

why can't we just call "the metro" a train? i've noticed the locals (are there any in an area like that?) correct people when they call it "the subway" or "the train".

On pace for 1.2 WAR, 5th lowest season number in his career. Per B-R

Also just remembered Thome is 7 HRs away from 600 HR. So they might not won't want to trade him if he's close to that.

Even worse, "the metro" refers to itself as "Metro," as in "if you took it on Metro, take it off Metro." But in my three years in DC I grew really fond of that train

While we're on it, what's up with the Broad Street Line's "daws closin'" announcement straight out of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

If he keeps going at his current pace, he'll be at #600 by ~July 15th, well before the deadline.

I'd really love for the Phils to go get Mike Aviles from the stupid Royals, who continue to play Chris Getz and Alcides Escobar instead. Aviles is sorta like Polanco with more power, more speed, and more strikeouts (maybe he's really not like Polanco). Can play 2B, 3B, SS, and probably OF as well.

Phillies got an A- grade from ESPN's SweetSpot, yet the Marlins got an A.
