was just farting around with b-r's EloRater, where they have readers of the site vote in a series of thousands of head-to-head "which player was better?" matchups between players with comparable careers to compile a list of the best batters and pitchers of all time. The list has 1750 batters and 1015 pitchers.

Juan Castro's rank among the 1750 batters is #1750.

It's pretty cool that a kid who attended the Phillies 2008 parade is in the Majors. If history is true to form, Mike Trout will be a World Champion Phillies someday, just like Jamie Moyer.

Are the Angles going to hang on to Weaver? They're locked into two of the worst contracts in baseball (Wells and Hunter, $81MM over the next 3 years between them). IMO his availability would take care of a lot of CC's leverage/lower the return for Hernandez

I went to the Camden Riversharks game yesterday. It was a lot of fun overall, except that the Southern Maryland Bluecrabs were pretty clearly superior.

I know I've read this on the board and should have known about it, but I forgot and absolutely flipped my lid when who but PEDRO MOTHER FUCKING FELIZ took third base for the Sharks

I don't like this since he was 40 when it happened and there were no WS parades in between.

Watched repeat of MLB Network pre-derby coverage this morning. It looks like they interviewed nobody but Yankees and Red Sox.

Speaking ofthis, at this time of year, every year, if you listen to New York and national media types, they inevitably compalin about the rule that each All-Star team must include one player from each team in each league, because after all that's not fair to the Yankees and Red Sox, since they have so many great players and what have the Royals ever done?

These same people then also often offer the "sour grapes" argument that the All-Star Game is a meaningless exhibition anyway.

Well, if it is meaningless, then WHY THE FUCK DOES IT MATTER IF A ROYAL OR A PIRATE GETS TO PLAY IN IT? I find this particular line of reasoning so very aggravating. In order to piss off New York and national media types, I would be in favor of a rule change that the All-Star game become, by rule, a game between the entire rosters of the Pirates and Royals every year, and that the winner STILL determined HFA for the WS.

OK, maybe not, but geez! KC and Pitt fans basically have one moment in the national spotlight every year - when their player is introduced at the All-Star Game. Let them have it for Christ's sake without the goddamn whining!

Too lazy to look for the fantasy thread but apparently Yahoo is counting the all star game statistics for this week?

You know what is funny? When you suddenly realize why certain things are called by the names they are called by. For example, it just dawned on me why the cheap seats are called "bleachers": because in early ballparks they were the uncovered seats, and thus exposed to the sun, and thus those who sat in them got "bleached." Bleachers.

Huh.

I just learned on Cash Cab (love the show, btw) that "gargoyle" comes from the French word for "throat," I assume because they act as drainpipes for the building. Suddenly, the word "gargle" makes perfect sense. I thought it was derived from the sound you make, but no, it's also derived from the French for throat.

How do you get "gargoyle" from "gorge"?

Anyone catch The Franchise tonight on Showtime? I'll warn you guys, the beginning is painful, show clips of Cody Ross doing Doc dirty in the LCS

I enjoyed it otherwise, Buster Posey's foot and ankle look disgusting. Pat doesn't seem to be on camera much, but there's a shot of him having a beer in the clubhouse after a W.

Also Barry Zito is a hippie.
Continued success, thanks for comin' on the show!

I'm guessing French in the gothic era was a bit different than modern French.

What's the deal with these "Put me on your roster or I'm going to the Yankees" situations of late? Are they just signing every single pitcher they can get there hands on?
