They're saving Jamie Moyer for the home opener.

Tate received a franchise-record $6.25 million signing bonus in August 2009 after the Padres drafted him with the No. 3 overall pick two months earlier. Two days after he signed, Tate suffered a sports hernia and missed the rest of the season. Tate then broke his jaw in an ATV accident in the offseason.
He played in just 25 games in 2010 after sustaining a variety of injuries. He sprained his left shoulder in spring training and was hit in the head and suffered a concussion shortly after his return. He also suffered from a stomach virus last summer.
Tate began the 2011 season at Single-A Fort Wayne and was 6-for-19 before he collided with teammate Everett Williams in the outfield, sustaining a bone bruise in his knee. Tate then headed to Peoria, Ariz., to rehab his injury.
Hoyer said the second positive test occurred after Tate arrived in Arizona, and he began receiving treatment for substance abuse. He recently returned to Eugene and was 10-for-26 in his past five games before the suspension was announced.

The Padres suck at this drafting stuff

To put this in a bit of perspective on how much the NL has caught up over the past few years: after finishing 22 games above .500 in 2003, the NL has finished Interleague play 2, 20, 56!, 22, 46, 24 and 16 games under .500. Seems like no matter what we're looking at our best showing since 2004 and a definite trend toward parity between the leagues.

I'm sure they are paying him but I'd hardly call it earning it.
