2011 ST Random Phillies Stuff III: The Search for Grit

Feel like Blanton would certainly have to go in a deal for Young just to help free up some money. Young is already old and has three years left I think. Don't know how I feel.

Well.

If Utley is close to death, then Id rather have Young for the entire year over anyone we have in camp. He'll be better at 3B with Lolanco at 2B.

The problem is, where does he play next year if Utley stays at 2B? LF?

Id think the Rangers would have to send more than the half theyve been talking about.

Id guess it will be Young +$30M for Cosart

yuck. I don't like Young at all and, if it's true that the Phils are considering, it probably means Utley is at death's door

The likelihood that No. 3 hitter Chase Utley is going to miss the season with that knee injury that threatens his career has the Phillies in full panic mode and ready to make a pitch for the Rangers' disgruntled Michael Young. Problem is, the Phillies' payroll is already over $160 million and Young is owed $16 million annually through 2013. It would likely have to be a deal in which the Rangers take back righty Joe Blanton, who's owed a total of $17 million for the next two seasons. But the Rangers are said to be looking to get good prospects back for Young and not have to eat much of his contract, and even if the Neftali Feliz-to-starter dalliance is abandoned, as expected, and he returns to the closer role, the Rangers might prefer the cheaper Kyle Kendrick over Blanton, who is more suited to the NL.

Here are the big keys.

* Young's 10/5 rights kick in sometime in May. If Texas doesnt trade him now, they lose a ton of leverage

* they want actual prospects back

* the rumor before was that they'd pay half his salary.

* if Utley is dead, then we could do worse than Young at 3B and Lolanco at 2B

if they send $30M and we send Kendrick and Cosart, then Young is essentially free for the next two seasons, and we're on the hook for $16M in 2013.

Im fine with that deal, given how much I hate Kendrick's face, my skepticism regarding Utley's entire well being, and the health of Cosart's arm/shoulder

How is P0lly filtered yet this Lolanco nonsense is allowed to continue unabated?

feel like it's set up for Young to really be vilified by Phillies fans if he comes here and hits like himself instead of the mystical player who lives in the Philly.com comment boards

Well most people love Polanco, and hes a .300 average singles hitter with a huge melon. Young has a smaller head and more power. Its not that he blows, its that hes really overpaid. Getting for an average of $5.5M per for the next 3 years would be a good deal

Shortstop. He sucks defensively, so i wouldn't do it, but right now the Phils don't have a 2012 SS.

Does Young even want to come here? He's all butthurt about playing time in Texas, and assuming Utley comes back at some point ever, he'll be a utility player here

Next year they could have Utley or Young play LF. This year, I'm assuming one of Polanco/Utley will always be hurt

i think if they trade for Young its an indication that the front office expects zero from Utley in 2011.

Young sucks at SS now. But hes still better all around there than Valdez, so its even more insurance against a Rollins injury.

At this point the trade feels like a formality. Phillies havent really gotten involved on Young, it goes quiet for a while, and now Rube uses Castillo as the gun to Daniels head.

Dont fuck with Rube, or you get the horns

On a positive note, if we get Young we also get his famous #1 fan...

Do we already have a Michael Young breakout thread?
