Marcel is this season stephen - but with worse hair and possibly a worse cook...for a long time my gf and i pegged sam and cliff as the finalists but cliff went into the crapper and even without the DQ was going to get sent home...I think certain peopl spent more time getting mad at marcel than worrying about food.

We were also constantly amazed that betty lasted as long as she did, as far as we could tell she just sucked bananas.

I wouldn't even know how to pitch something liek that or if it would work, but i've seen worse reality shows become hits.

With all those sharp knives and flammable substances, think of all the potential kitchen accidents just waiting to happen. That would have to make for decent ratings.

For the big finale of Top Chef, I am just waiting for Sam and Ilan to actually make a dish out of Marcel or at least try to stuff him into a microwave. Oh the drama.

Marcel doesnt annoy me as much as that sommelier guy last year. (cant remember his name) He was so smug and I hated his face- I just wanted to punch him.

Ahh Stephen, that's the guy, I just wanna hit him square in the nose.

I was amazed Michael lasted as long as he did and just when you think the judges were going to can him, he wins both competitions- they wasted no time getting rid of him the week after. I think on TC and PR they sometimes consider how a contestant has done previously and even if that contestant does worse than another they will get rid of the scape goat.

I remember the first season of top chef...the guy who blew it in the final 3...not because he made bad dishes, in fact he was better, he just forgot to make a dish, he got screwed over and that annoying red headed girl made it instead to the fials (and you KNEW she was going to lose)

They had a text message poll of who you thought did a better job and the red head only got 10% of the vote.

I felt so bad for that gay guy cause he deserrved it so much more (even though he would have lost in the finals too...the other guy just was head and shoulder better in all aspects of the competition)...

I think the cometition is Sams to lose...he just has the right temperment for the 'final two' where people help you out...i wonder who gets stuck with marcel.

BTW did you ever notice that Tom Colicchio from Top Chef looks like Dennis Hof, onwer of the Bunny Ranch and star of HBO's Cathouse?

I like Top Chef, but I don't think anyone this season is that impressive or even compares to Harold.

I'm surprise Bravo didn't do a series for Harold like they did with the first season winner of Project Runway...i'm curios as to how it all worked out for him, he was a pretty likeable guy

Doubt it, why would they replace the lead character on the top rated show. I agree he stinks BTW. On OnA they have been playing this bit where someone took a bunch of his opening lines and strung them together, it's really freakin' funny. Supposedly it came from a youtube clip if you wanna see it.

I don't even watch the show, but this is hilarious.

I have read all his stand alone books and enjoyed them all...i have all 3 hard cover books in the baroque cycle but haven't yet had the courage to delve into them...historical stuff, even fictional historical stuff is always hard for me...i've never been able to get more than 30 pages into the difference engine and i'm a huge gibson fan, even loved the most recent more 'current' one (he has a new book he's working on according to his blog)

Funny that I haven't read Snow Crash yet -- I got about halfway through the audiobook version once. The Baroque cycle was tough to start. I picked up the first before a vacation, on the discount tabe no less, and got a couple chapters in. That's when VoxJr started a his medical problems, and I put it down for nearly two years. But once I got going, I couldn't stop.

I tried, but couldn't get into Top Chef at all. The contestants all seemed like douches.

We usually watch cooking shows in the early evening. VoxJr loves Good Eats and Unwrapped, and is pysched when he gets to see them both.

Crappy Sunday afternoon with no football and nothing to watch?

Warrior Queen Boudica is on History right now. Pretty cool so far - documentary about a Celtic Queen that beat back the Romans.

I love Stephenson, and Snow Crash is probably the most fun. But the one I thought was the very best was "Cryptonomicon." Mind-blowing stuff and probably as good an examination of how technology evolves and "matters" as anything out there. That was the book that, IMO, put Stephenson up there with the po-mo gods like Pynchon and Delillo.

The Baroques were really ambitious--maybe more so than anything I've ever read. And ultimately I thought they were worthwhile. But they are tough sledding, no doubt about it. One might need to be as big a geek about both history and epic fiction as I am to really get through 'em.
