I enjoy Studio 60 - i think the christmas episode was great

Big Dexter fan, I've read both the books and when they announced the series, for the life of me I couldn't come up with a good name to play dexter, but I think they cast it perfectly.

Some of the changes from the tv show from the book are irritating, not so much in expanding other characters, but in how they changed the 'ice truck killer' / dexter involvement (yes they are brothers in the book too) to make it more 'personal' or whatever...i thought the book played it very well

Dexter was great, shotime seemed to have better shows this year than HBO.

I cant get into Studio 60 at all, its too smug. I hated west wing for the same reasons.

I loved West Wing, but the first 4 or 5 episodes were pretty rough. The Wrap Party was really just... ugh.
The Christmas Party was a good one though, I'm almost starting to dig on the Matthew Perry/Sarah Paulson relationship. It's just hard to buy them together when all we see is them fighting. I get that's the swerve of it, but I mean, come on. The episode where she was thinking about stripping was the first time they actually looked like they had any sort of chemistry.
RE: Dexter, the book did play the finale better, I thought. I was really hoping Dex would tell Deb about his "affliction", but the tv finale was extremely cinematic, and I enjoyed the last scenes greatly. But looking at Showtime's lineup... looks like I'll be cancelling that one until Dexter comes back.

Seems to. Showtime is better at getting their shows out once a year, no mindless delays between seasons. HBO allowed The Sopranos to work on their own schedule, taking 2 years or 1.5 years between seasons. The same thing with The Wire.

Dexter will be back in october again, Weeds in august, etc. HBO is still better in overall quality, but Showtime is catching up. Normally the people who have HBO and/or Showtime are fans of good TV and watch a lot of TV, and at this point, you can't have one without the other.

Of course, you can always get the shows for free if you download like me, but not everyone is as smart as me.

Hey now, Weeds is perfectly watchable and I can understand enjoying it for the occasional quip, for Kevin Nealon, and just to see what happens (a la Entourage), but it's certainly not a good show by the better HBO/Showtime standards. The character's motivations are often silly and/or irrational, they tend to disappear forever after they've served their plot machination, the black woman drug dealer is the dumbest character on HBO or Showtime, I could go on and on. It's just mediocre. At least the first season is, haven't seen the second yet. It's not an example of Showtime catching up is all I'm getting at; Dexter and other shows may be.

I don't know, he felt like it? Wanted some time off. Liev Schrieber is taking his place for the 5 or 6 episodes he is missing.

I like Liev Shcreiber...i like how CSI introduces a story line (grissom and sara sleeping together finally...warricks marriage falling apart) and then hardly ever mentions it again.

I was hoping the 'doll house' serial killer would last longer,

I didn't think this edition of Sleeper Cell was in the same ballpark as the original one.

I thought Brotherhood was great though. Better than anything on HBO other than The Wire.

Interesting thoughts on comics and film by neil gaiman here.

Moore was interviewed on BBC2's the culture show this year and said he felt that a tale told in comic book form just didn't lend itself to film. I'm pretty much okay with his stance on the adaptations - it's not *his* story, so why should he be bothered, so long as they pay him for the use of his characters. Sometimes the results are interesting (I enjoyed V for Vendetta, but london wasn't present as a presence in the film was the films wasn't as dark a place than the comic, and in truth, it was harder for it to be relevant - Blair's Britain is not Thatcher's Britain, and the fears of a far right takeover are not as prevalent as they once were).

I'm more concerned about the next Batman film. Nolan's Batman Begins was the best portrayal I've seen of the Batman character and the world of gotham - but next he's taking on a tricky relationship in Batman vs the Joker. I want to see a cinema treatment of that relationship every bit as compelling, insightful and human as Moore's The Killing Joke - and on paper Nolan, who is an actor's director (to my mind) should deliver. But he gets funny with his clever-clever tricks and characters can get lost in the process (Insomnia a classic example to my mind), so I'm worried it won't come off.

Still, knowing its heath ledger as the joker, and having seen his performance in Brokeback Mountain over christmas, I think they've got an interesting guy to do the joker.

If they can avoid making the Joker over the top funny and instead portray him as the sad and insane homicidal maniac that he is, then it'll stand a chance.
