the division is essentially wrapped up. A win to tonight makes it basically official.

WTOP, the KYW of Washington D.C., declared the East all but over this morning. That was a bit of an eye opener, especially since they tend to ignore the Phillies unless they are playing the Nats or it is playoff time. Then again, "it ain't over until its over."

can you quantify the difference between "essentially wrapped up" and "basically official"?

Heyman tweet estimates Werth will get five years, $80M. Also says we offered him a Jason Bay deal (4 years, $66M) and it was rejected.

I don't think the Phils have a letdown again this season. With that said, you can't win them all and you won't win them all. Still, if and when they lose again I don't think it'll be a letdown. Some pitcher will pitch well against us and they'll eke one out.

I think the Phils have their eyes firmly on the prize and want the best record in all the major leagues. For that reason they will be extremely focused every game and there won't be any letdowns.
I shoulda never been banned from the EMB and BSG!

well why take $16.5M over 4 if you are told you are worth $16M over 5? We are talking about $14M after all.

You misspelled Valdez

Also Boras is already starting the whole Werth-Holliday comparisons with "he's had just as good as contract year, plus he's a better defender." Still under 5% IMO we'd bring him back

Crasnick ranking the deadline moves

1. Philadelphia Phillies acquire starter Roy Oswalt and cash from Houston for lefty pitcher J.A. Happ and two minor leaguers

How good has Oswalt been since joining the Phillies? Consider this: Washington first baseman Adam Dunn thinks Oswalt is a lot better today than when he was in Houston. And Dunn was in Cincinnati for eight years when Oswalt was racking up most of his cartoon numbers (23-3 with a 2.81 ERA) against the Reds.

One reason: Oswalt is making more effective use of his changeup. According to baseball statistics site FanGraphs, Oswalt is throwing the pitch 14.2 percent of the time, compared to 6.1 percent last year in Houston. Dunn was shocked when he faced Oswalt on Friday and got a changeup on a 2-0 count.

"This is the best I've seen him," Dunn said. "He'd kill us in Cincinnati, but we always had a chance. It didn't feel like, 'Aw crap, here's Roy.' He's just a better pitcher now. It used to be if the count was 2-0, you could book a heater. Now you might get a fastball, a curveball, a slider or a stinkin' good change. You don't know what you're gonna get."

Happ, shortstop Jonathan Villar and first baseman Brett Wallace, who arrived from Toronto in a spinoff trade, might all help Houston in the long term. But Oswalt is 7-1 with a 1.94 ERA for a team with serious designs on a world championship. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro hit the jackpot with this one.

Grade: A. We'll add a "+" if Oswalt pitches in the World Series.

Also, a bit off topic, but how about Matt Capps. From the Pirates-->Nationals-->closing out the Twins clincher last night. He's number 2 on this list.

Jumping the gun a little, but do we think Sweeney will make the postseason roster? If they carry only 11 pitchers, they can have six bench guys. Assuming J-Roll is back, they would be:

Francisco
Gload
Exxon
Schneider
Dobbs
_______

Dobbs kinda shouldn't be on there, but with Rollins and Polanco hurting, they need guys who can play both of those positions, and theoretically they might need both of them at once. Dobbs is, unfortunately, the best third baseman of the remaining group after Exxon - because he is basically the only third baseman of the group outside of Exxon (Sweeney's experience there not withstanding). So I think Dobbs' spot on the postseason roster is assured.

For the last spot, you have: Sweeney, Brown, Hoover, and Mayberry.

Before the World Series round, when you don't need a DH, you maybe have an argument for not carrying Brown. But if the Phillies get that far, I think they have to use Brown there. So we are talking about the NL playoffs only if Sweeney is to make it.

You could argue that before the WS round, they would want another righty for that sixth bench spot, so that might allow Sweeney to make it, over Mayberry anyway.

Of course, if they think they need a 12th pitcher, he's sunk.

It'll be close, but I think he makes it, at least for the NLDS, and we'll see from there.
