Let that enthusiastic old racist rest in peace.

He was a big voice on the "don't integrate" side of things back in the 1940s.

The obituaries don't really make him sound that bad. He barnstormed with Satchel Paige after WWII before the color barrier was broken. He seems like a 1940s version of Curt Schilling with a better fastball.

I don't really think that was the case-in fact I've seen him noted as particularly pro-integration, although I'm willing to look at evidence otherwise. I know he initially didn't think much of Jackie Robinson as a ballplayer, and he had a bad habit of saying awkward things, particularly in his later years. But I also know he organized a barnstorming tour with Satchel Paige and other negro ballplayers and maintained good relations with teammates of all races both during and after his career. I think he was cantankerous and ill-tempered and not very tolerant at times, but I think racist is a little too simplistic for a guy with his long and varied life.

Eh, looking things over, it would appear I was mistaken. I could have sworn I read that Feller was one of those obnoxiously against integration, but I guess I was wrong.

So, I take it all back. RIP big guy.

I don't think it would really be fair, even if he was racist (which evidently he wasn't), to think someone born in 1918 was a bad person if they were prejudice. I mean, that's a lonnnnnnng time ago. What do you think he heard from his parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, friends' parents, EVERYONE growing up?

Wow. This is true, apparently. Wow.

In the 1930s?

I am really astonished.

I Van Meter, Iowa to boot.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Speaking of Joe Poz, here's a wonderful piece about Greinke. It almost makes me wish we had held out to get him instead of Lee.

Oh, hell, let's trade for him anyway.

Goes to show how fuckin awful that 06 team was. Freese is much better than that MVP.
