What's the average for other NL East teams based on this years current pace then?

Trent Steele wrote:It's going to be like this all year with Lidge. They need to take him out of the closer role. Charlie can't get into the habit of not using Contreras because he doesn't know how Lidge is going to feel on any given night. Make Contreras the closer now, at least until Lidge can establish he can pitch for a month with regular usage without breaking down or sucking a la 2009.

According to fangraphs, Lidge's fastball is down to 92.3 mph from 93.6 last year, 94.3 in 1998 and 95.4 in 2007. Small sample size, I know, but maybe that explains why he has thrown his slider an unbelieveable 65% of the time.

It's not like he threw mainly fastballs when he was unhittable though, he was 56% sliders in 2008 as well, and he was also at less that 50% fastballs in his best career year, 2004

Last year the problem with his fastball IMO was that he literally couldn't get it within 8 inches of his location. If he can spot better than that, but more importantly have a consistently nasty slider with depth, IMO 93 mph is fine

From my complete lack of meteorological knowledge, I am letting everyone know to temper their expectations for tonight's game being played. DH tomorrow looks probable.

Figuring in games played so far this year, but not doing pace things:

Atlanta - 811-677 (88.3-73.7)
Philadelphia - 805-684 (87.6-74.4)
Florida - 747-742 (81.3-80.7)
NY Mets - 738-750 (80.3-81.7)
Washington/Montreal - 662-827 (72-90)

Obviously if you go back two years further, it gets better for the Mets and Atlanta, and worse for the Phillies.

Just asking. Would you rather have Kevin Millwood or Pedro as a late season pick up?

I would rather have Endy Chavez, attempting to pitch, than Kevin Millwood, so there.

Also, Pedro costs nothing except money.

The Kevin Millwood hatred runs deep in my family. Actually future generations in my family are being raised to hate Kevin Millwood as much as simply being Phillies fans.

Millwood is a fat POS.

Moyer ranks 21st among all MLB starters in WHIP.

I still think the biggest thing is, my intense dislike for Millwood aside, that Pedro 1) wants to pitch and 2) costs only a pro-rated portion of a year's salary. No prospects.

Remind me again why Millwood deserves to be hated? Was it the glove-throwing non-incident? Or just that he didn't live up to expectations after setting the bar high with his no-hitter?

Great article on Jamie Moyer. It answers the question of why he won't retire.

Because they're paying him $8MM not to? Sounds like all the reason I'd need
