Eskin is just embarrassing. Keeps whining that the Phillies "didn't do what's best for the franchise over the next two years". Doesn't care about prospects. "Before Cole Hamels, the Phillies had never developed a two time all star pitcher" (some nonsense guage of quality he came up with).

• For the Phillies, the key to this trade is not 2009. Adding Lee ups their chances of qualifying for the Big Baseball Tournament from 75 percent to something like 80 percent, and their chances of winning the tournament from maybe eight percent to 10 percent (and yes, I'm just sort of making up those two numbers). Where Lee really helps the Phillies is next season, when they'll have him for six full months (at least). This will be portrayed a short-term deal, when in fact it's a medium-term deal.
• Considering how much less money Lee makes than Roy Halladay, and considering how much less the Phillies had to give up to get Lee than they would have to have given up to get Halladay, Ruben Amaro deserves a great deal of credit for this choice. His next big chore? Developing all those young players he wouldn't give to the Blue Jays.
• I think the Indians got a fine haul. Everyone's going to fixate on the Indians not getting the Phillies' best prospects, but that speaks more to the Phillies' incredible wealth of prospects more than anything else. As I've written at least a couple of times, Carlos Carrasco is an excellent prospect; he might be the Indians' best starter as soon as next summer.
• You know how I feel about Class A pitchers: most of them won't wind up being worth a bucket of lukewarm spit. But this Class A pitcher the Indians are getting, Jason Knapp, throws 97 and has struck out 149 professional hitters in 116 professional innings. If you're going to get a Class A pitcher, this is probably the best kind to get.
So let's call it a win-win. And considering the weakness of the American League Central, I'm not even sure we should heavily discount the Indians' chances of getting into the mix next year.
