I meant to throw my 2 cents into this when you posted it, but forgot.

-He's throwing 3% more first pitch strikes than he did last season.
-xbabip is something like .264, babip is .252. a little lucky, but not bad.
-His BB/9 and K/9 figures coincide pretty well with the increase in first pitch strikes.

-Here's the outlier: he's giving up more flyballs than he ever has, yet his HR/FB is 5%, compared to 9.6% and 10.2% the previous two seasons. That's good for 10th in the league. Out of the top 10, only 2 guys have flyball rates over 40%, Edwin and Jair Jurrjens, and Edwin is outpacing Jair by 5% (47% to 42%..rounding up for both). Out of the top 10, 4 pitchers are under 30% FB's, with the other 4 in the 30% area (although Greinke is close to 40% himself).

I've only watched one or two starts of his, so I can't speak to his stuff or the situations he's been in, but he's over his head right now. His FIP is a run higher than his actual ERA at this point (2.24--3.28). The correction on the HR rate alone should just about cover that, but he's still made enough improvements in throwing strikes that it's probably safe to say that he's legit, although not as good as his ERA.

thanks, kruker.

yeah, that FIP of 3.28 doesn't look too bad. it's interesting that him and verlander have both always had the knockout stuff and are putting it together this year for the tigers.

I was thinking about this the other day, in these terms: if I moved to another city, which teams would I actively adopt as a second team, versus which teams I could never bring myself to root for no matter what.

Here is the list I came up with:

Would buy tickets/follow/like: White Sox (my fav non-Phillies team), Tigers (my wife is from Michigan), Mariners (so irrelevant to the Phillies and so far away as to be OK to cheer for), Athletics (ex-Philadelphia, rooting for them strictly on that basis), Pirates (so bad it's sad, plus gorgeous ballpark)

Would buy tickets, would be on the fence about rooting for: Orioles (if I'm that close, why don't I just go to the Phillies?)

Would buy tickets but root against in many circumstances: Indians (like White Sox), Royals (like White Sox, KC stole the Athletics), Rays, Twins, Reds, Padres, Yankees (hate the Red Sox, so it amuses me when the Yankees beat them, but other than that the Yankees are evil), Rangers (they play near Dallas), Angels (LA sucks), Brewers

Would only buy tickets to games against the Phillies, might go if a group of people I wanted to go with was going, but only to be social and would actively root against the home team if possible: Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mets, Marlins, Braves, Nationals, Cubs, Cardinals, Astros, Dodgers, Giants, Diamondbacks, Rockies

Of these, my feeling is the cubbies could persuade you to move them up a flight

Giants, a long shot
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Nah, I hate the Cubs. National League Red Sox, them and their fans.

It has been mentioned in this forum already but I really do find it sad that Tiger Stadium is no more. Especially the way they tore it down in pathetic piecemeal fashion, hoping to keep only a ridiculous segment behind home plate (hoping to keep it for future development). I never made it there there but I doubt the spiffy new park they have will ever possess the character Tiger Stadium seemed to.

They've been around almost 100 years, so not likely.
Cubs probably have fans because of Wrigley, I think.

The Cubs piss me off because most of their fans take pride in the fact they've sucked for the better part of 100 years. Granted, the Phillies have been historically bad, but I never openly joked and laughed about their futility and no other Phils fan I know has either. The bleacher people are especially bad because they act like they're dedicated Cub fans but they really just come to get loaded and don't give a rat's arse about what's going on in the game. That's why I never really want to go to Opening day games here, because so many people come down just to tailgate and drink and won't come to another game the whole year. Drunks are tolerable at football games, but I like the baseball crowd to actually be interested and involved in the game.

Never saw a game at Tiger Stadium, but I did get a chance to take pictures of the outside of it in 2005 during my sole trip to Detroit. I sure wish I'd been able to get inside...
