Oof. Feels like a Monday.

What day of the week it is apparently doesn't have a huge impact on my day to day life.

Ryan Howard rates higher defensively than the Yankees' Mark Teixeira, according to the plus-minus ratings on Bill James Online.

"Defensively, he's absolutely extraordinary right now," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says of Howard. "He's literally playing a Gold Glove-caliber first base right now, in every phase."

Howard merits a plus-five, meaning that he has made five plays above the number that an average fielder would make, according to the video scouts at Baseball Info Solutions.

Teixeira rates a plus-four, along with the Braves' Casey Kotchman, Padres' Adrian Gonzalez and Rangers' Chris Davis.

The Blue Jays' Lyle Overbay and Giants' Travis Ishikawa lead all first basemen at plus-seven. The Royals' Billy Butler and Red Sox's Kevin Youkilis are plus-six.

There are aspects of defense at 1B that +/- doesn't address. One big one, I'd guess is saving throwing errors from the rest of the infielders with fancy dan moves around the bag. Given the Phils' infielders have very few errors, you'd ave to think Howard is very good here too.

Howard's range is really good according to Dewan and yet he doesn't seem to be getting in Utley's way like he did last season. That's another good thing. He seems to be very good with the running down pop ups as well.

It would really be cool if he won a GG this season. Especially if he deserved it.

Utley's UZR has dropped a lot this year, so my guess is that the Phils' defensive positioning has changed, making Howard's range look slightly better at Utley's expense.

Yeah. Utley isn't doing so hot with the +/- stuff either. He's +2 and ranked 12th at 2B after being +46 last season. I have a feeling the pitching staff and the way players are positioned has a great effect on defensive stats. As does ballpark and probably a bunch of other stuff.

Ibanez is a +2 and ranks 13th amongst LFers. Feliz looks like an outstanding 3Bman and he had great +/- with the Giants but he changes teams and his numbers go down. While it's possible Ibanez was the king of defensive suck last season and has improved greatly for some reason and Feliz' defense declined upon coming to Philly, it's also possible that pitching staff and positioning and team context and park factors influence these defensive stats in ways we don't have a great handle on yet.

Adam Eaton and Chan Ho Park are the only pitchers in their 30s to have started games for the Phillies since the start of the 2008 season.

The more I think about it, the crazier it gets that the Reds were so disinterested in re-signing Adam Dunn this offseason. Looking at their RS/RA, if they had Dunn right now, they'd almost certainly be in first place.

I can work up hate for just about any non-Phillies major league team. The only exceptions are probably the Twins and maybe the Giants.

Why the Padres and Mariners?

The Padres used to have these hideous brown uniforms. For some reason, the Gillick connection is enough for me on the Mariners.

And if you want any of this to make sense, too bad. I'd probably not hate the Royals if they tried to win.

I was thinking about this the other day, in these terms: if I moved to another city, which teams would I actively adopt as a second team, versus which teams I could never bring myself to root for no matter what.

Here is the list I came up with:

Would buy tickets/follow/like: White Sox (my fav non-Phillies team), Tigers (my wife is from Michigan), Mariners (so irrelevant to the Phillies and so far away as to be OK to cheer for), Athletics (ex-Philadelphia, rooting for them strictly on that basis), Pirates (so bad it's sad, plus gorgeous ballpark)

Would buy tickets, would be on the fence about rooting for: Orioles (if I'm that close, why don't I just go to the Phillies?)

Would buy tickets but root against in many circumstances: Indians (like White Sox), Royals (like White Sox, KC stole the Athletics), Rays, Twins, Reds, Padres, Yankees (hate the Red Sox, so it amuses me when the Yankees beat them, but other than that the Yankees are evil), Rangers (they play near Dallas), Angels (LA sucks), Brewers

Would only buy tickets to games against the Phillies, might go if a group of people I wanted to go with was going, but only to be social and would actively root against the home team if possible: Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mets, Marlins, Braves, Nationals, Cubs, Cardinals, Astros, Dodgers, Giants, Diamondbacks, Rockies

I pretty much don't mind any of the AL teams except the Yankees and Red Sox

I'm not really a big fan of the Rays, but yeah I'm pretty much of the same mind. Almost all NL teams bother me in some way, however.
