Thread Breakout: The *Official* Fire Tom McCarthy Thread

Postby BigEd76 » Wed Apr 29, 2009 15:04:06

From what I remember of the 80s broadcasts, Musser was the worst of the "free TV" guys but he was still better than anything PRISM offered...

I liked Musser well enough, but I was young and not discerning. But we'll always have these:

"Pitch to Schmidt. Long drive to left field - he buried it - HE BURIED IT! - WAY BACK! OUTTA HERE! HOME RUN MIKE SCHMIDT, PUTS THE PHILLIES UP 6-4. Oh what a drive by Schmidt - unbelievable!"

"The pitch by Ruthven. Swing and a punch shot into center field, Maddox racing over - YAY! HE CATCHES THE BALL! The Phillies win the pennant! The Phillies have won the pennant (voice cracking)! The Phillies win the ballgame 8-7, and got to the World Series for the first time in 30 years!"
"I'm in a bar with the games sound turned off and that Cespedes home run still sounded like inevitability."

I feel like he's only near and dear, as his old nonsense is appreciated for novelty. I don't think he's a good-to-very good color guy. He has improved, but I don't think he's great for it.

I'm down for a change in thread title to demote. I just want to hear the guy lean the correct way from now on. Further issues will be met with fierce dislike!

Sometimes I feel bad for TMac. I mean he's just trying to make a living.

Bumping this to find out if anyone has Rob Brooks' e-mail/number or can tell us what the broadcast set-up is going to be this year.

I'd give Franzke a full year of separation so he isn't the immediate successor

This reminds me. My dad's friend gives tours of CBP and met McCarthy the other day. He's a really nice guy apparently.

I've always heard the same thing about him. Hopefully he's better this year. There were some points last year when he became bearable. I remember saying "hey, he's not doing too bad" when Howard hit that 600 foot grand slam. He legitimately sounded excited at that point. He just needs to learn to not talk as much, and I'd prefer he doesn't tell any of his "stories" this year.

"You know, I was talking to Jayson earlier today... and..."

Someone forward T-Mac a list of transitions other than "and speaking of" and he will become 25% more bearable in 2010.

Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

I was ambivalent towards T-Mac prior to Harry's passing, but he annoyed me more as the season progressed. Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of Franzke. The guy I really want, Scott Graham, doesn't appear to be an option at all.

Looks like it's another year of the sound off and the radio on for me.

How can you not love Franzke? The guy has an incredible voice and calls big plays consistently awesome. His call on Jimmy's NLCS walk-off is epic, I've listened to it over and over all off season.

This thread shouldn't be bumped unless it includes a tweet saying that Tom McCarthy is working at Jiffy Lube now and sends his best.
